Primary Role

Performs a variety of tasks associated with the operation and maintenance of the water treatment plant, facilities, grounds, and equipment, including electrical and mechanical pumps, motors, chemical feed systems and instrumentation. Also performs the duties of the assistant plant operator position as required.

Key Accountabilities


  • Performs all functions of the position in a safe and conscientious manner, with constant regard for the safety of self, fellow employees, and the general public.

  • Operates, maintains, and controls electric motors, pumps, and valves to regulate operation of plant.

  • Feeds specified amounts of chemicals, such as chlorine, ammonia, and corrosion inhibitor into water supply and/or adjust automatic devices that admit specified amounts of chemicals into water to disinfect and otherwise treat water.

  • Documents chemical feed activities and system performance with written reports and automatic charts.

  • Records data, such as residual content of chemicals, water pressure, power consumption, water output, and chemical consumption.

  • Monitors panel board(s) and adjust controls to regulate flow rates and water storage and distribution of water.

  • Repairs and lubricates machines and equipment, using hand tools and power tools.

  • Collects water samples so that basic water quality parameters may be determined.

  • Inspects, disassembles, and repairs damaged or malfunctioning control devices of water distribution systems.

  • Replaces defective parts or installs new control devices.

  • Troubleshoots and repairs electrical and control circuits, using diagnostic equipment and hand tools.

  • Listens for unusual sounds from machines or equipment to detect malfunction and discusses machine operation variations with supervisors or other maintenance workers to diagnose problem or repair machine/equipment.

  • Interprets specifications, blueprints, electrical drawings, and job orders.

  • Operates cutting torch or welding equipment to cut or join metal parts.

  • Fabricates and repairs structures.

  • Repairs or replaces faulty wiring, switches, or relays.

  • Connects power supply wires to machines and equipment.

Additional Key Accountabilities


  • Replaces electric motor bearings and rewires motors.

  • Lays out, assembles, installs, and maintains pipe systems, and related hydraulic and pneumatic equipment, electrical conduit and repairs and replaces gauges, valves, pressure regulators, and related equipment.

  • Turns valves, pulls levers, and flips switches to operate and control motor driven pumps.

  • Reads and adjust flow-meters and gauges to regulate equipment according to water consumption and demand.

  • Inspects equipment to detect malfunctions, such as pump leaks or worn bearing.

  • Maintains facility buildings and grounds at appropriate appearance standards to include general housekeeping such as sweeping, dusting, mopping, etc.

  • Cleans basins. Digs ditches either by hand or using small backhoe.

  • Operates electric hoist.

  • Determines action to be taken in the event of an emergency, such as, but not limited to, machine, equipment, or power failure.

  • Operates company vehicles and forklift as required.

  • Performs other duties asssigned by supervisor.

Travel Requirements

Driver license required and ability to clear motor vehicle check.
