What you will do:

Under broad direction from the Vice President & Assistant General Counsel, Building Solutions, North America, the Legal Director will lead the global legal function for Johnson Controls’ Sensormatic business.  With revenues of approximately $1 billion, the Sensormatic business is a leading global provider of patented, technology-enabled solutions which serve 65 of the top 100 retails globally by helping them grow revenue and profitability through mission critical solutions, focused on loss prevention, inventory intelligence and shopper insights. 

How you will do it


  • The Legal Director will lead the legal and compliance efforts for the world-wide Sensormatic business operations and will need to build out the internal and external capabilities of this organization world-wide, from compliance and legal entity maintenance, to commercial, litigation, labor and employment, and intellectual property.


  • The Legal Director will play a critical role as a key member of the Sensormatic leadership team, have a dotted line reporting to the President of the Sensormatic and help ensure that the business achieves its objectives.  In order to do this, the Legal Director must be proactive in identifying both legal and business opportunities and risks (and mitigating those risks). 


  • The department will focus on: (i) negotiation of complex commercial and procurement contracts; (ii) organic and inorganic growth initiatives including strategic alliances along with mergers and acquisitions; (iii) ensuring commercial readiness for the business’ products; (iv) driving business simplification and operations improvements, including cash collections and contract enforcement, inventory management, cost reduction and manufacturing and supply chain continuity; (v) identifying risk and risk mitigation; and (vi) helping the business gain a competitive advantage by protecting technology and intellectual property.  


  • The Legal Director must have a broad background that will enable them to proactively provide legal advice across a full range of issues that confront product development, manufacturing, distribution, service, and software businesses. 


  • The Legal Director must have experience developing and executing a legal strategy for the business they support, including establishing the organization design to support the business strategy and selecting, hiring, and managing the resources (internal and external) to execute the strategy.

Requirements/Qualifications:


  • J.D. degree from ABA accredit law school and licensed to practice law within the United States with a minimum of 15+ years of relevant experience in a major law firm, a multinational corporation, or both.


  • Experience handling complex contract negotiation (including SaaS contracting, joint development and strategic alliances), litigation/dispute resolution, distribution, anti-trust, technology, product development, software and other intellectual property licensing, creation and protection of intellectual property, privacy, cybersecurity, manufacturing and mergers and acquisitions.


  • Disciplined legal drafter/writer.


  • Strong team management and leadership skills, including demonstrated capabilities of managing teams across regions.


  • Possess a high level of integrity, initiative, and professionalism.  


  • Experience at a major private equity-backed company is a preferred.


  • Experience selecting and managing an outside counsel network on an international basis is required.


  • Ability to develop and sustain relationships with management at all levels across geographies and customer management skills are required.
