The Controls Engineer is responsible for development, testing and implementation of all programming and electrical controls. This includes, but is not limited to all programmable controller platforms, graphical user interface platforms, gateways, AC/DC electrical schematic development and debugging as well as to train the Maintenance department on these systems. Also, assist with equipment control upgrades, troubleshooting and installation. Oversight of Maintenance Technicians regarding Controls issues and assigned projects.

Job Duties :

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:


  • Develop, test and implement all programming and electrical controls on oven and packaging equipment. This includes, but is not limited to all programmable controller platforms, graphical user interface platforms, gateways and debugging when necessary.
  • Develop AC/DC electrical schematics.
  • Electrical System design and implementation.
  • Project management.
  • Print library/archive management.
  • NFPA 70E Arc Flash program management.
  • Troubleshoot and perform electrical repairs on oven and packaging equipment from 24 volt DC to 480 volt AC.
  • Assist with equipment control upgrades, troubleshooting and installation.
  • Train the Maintenance department on all electrical control systems.
  • Assist Maintenance Manager in the supervision of Maintenance Technicians
  • Perform safety audits and checks on oven and packaging equipment.
  • Develop and maintain documentation of assigned projects and equipment repairs through work orders.
  • Operate a forklift as needed.
  • Maintain current backup files of equipment programs

Required Competencies & Knowledge :

Knowledge of:


  • Hearthside procurement, products and production processes.
  • Knowledge and experience with EAM and SAP.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and standards.
  • Knowledge of NFPA 70E Arc Flash program.

Skill in:


  • Demonstrated proficiency in electrical knowledge including AC/DC circuits, motor controls and troubleshooting/repair of up to 480 volt systems.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in PLC-GUI programming, controls design and implementation.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in AutoCAD electrical schematic one line drawing development and mechanical drawing development.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Allen Bradley PLC software, Gateways, Ladder Logic, Panel View, RS Logic software, Servos, VFD(s) and Wonderware.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in managing multiple projects and training coworkers.

Ability to:


  • Be detailed-oriented, be self-directed, have strong self-confidence and have excellent oral communication skills.
  • Work overtime on short notice, including call-ins for emergencies.
  • Maintaining harmonious relationships and effectively communicating with all customers, suppliers, local and corporate-wide HFS employees and the Michigan City manufacturing staff.

Proficiency in : MS Office Suite, EAM and SAP

Work Environment :


  • Work is primarily done in a manufacturing setting at eight (8) to twelve (12) hour shifts.
  • Continuous production environment exposure, which includes noise, dust, moving machinery, fork lifts and fluctuations in temperature.

Physical Requirements :


  • Standing for extended periods of time.
  • Stand, walk and climb stairs on a frequent basis.
  • Must be able to lift 100 pounds on an infrequent basis.

Minimum Qualifications :



    • Minimum five years electrical/programming design and implementation, project management, NFPA 70E program exposure, electrical/programming shop floor assistance/training, AutoCADD
    • Bachelor Degree preferably in Electrical Engineering
    • Must be detailed-oriented, be self-directed, have strong self-confidence and have excellent oral communication skills.
    • Must be able to uphold Hearthside's mission, vision and values on a daily basis.
