Job Description:

McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston , a leading academic health center, invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), tenure clinical track, Associate Professor position in the Department of Internal Medicine , Division of Rheumatology . A significant track record in clinical and translational research as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications and active federal research funding is required for this position.

The selected candidate will contribute to UT Health Houston's mission to educate health science professionals, discover and translate advances in the biomedical and social sciences, and model the best practices in clinical care and public health through clinical service, education, and research.

Position Key Accountabilities:

The primary focus will be disease-relevant clinical or translational research in either systemic sclerosis or spondyloarthritis, two disease areas with active, ongoing research programs in the Division of Rheumatology/Department of Internal Medicine. The position involves outpatient and inpatient clinical care and teaching medical students and residents in clinic and hospital settings.


  • Developing and sustaining an environment in the patient care units that support excellence and innovation in clinical practice and patient care through assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating programs and standards that support positive patient care outcomes to include excellent risk-adjusted outcomes.
  • Providing coaching, mentoring, support, and consultation to attending physicians, research personnel, colleagues, and clinical staff.
  • Serving as role model in professional behavior and leadership skills, problem-solving ability, and interpersonal skills.
  • Delegating authority and accountability to clinical & nursing staff for clinical practice and patient care decisions that are consistent with professional standards, regulatory agencies, and organizational policies and procedures.
  • Identifying patient and family needs of the populations served; recommending and/or developing new programs and services to meet those needs.
  • Collaborating with UTHealth Houston and hospital administration and physicians to identify opportunities for efficiency, productivity, and patient throughput targets across the care continuum.
  • Participating in and/or chairing committees, work groups, and meetings as appropriate.
  • Maintaining professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, in-services, current literature, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of the latest trends in fields of expertise; supporting and promoting education and research.

Considering the substantial research focus of this position, a strong publication track record and active federal research funding are required.

Preferred applicants will possess a Texas Medical License or be eligible for a Texas Faculty Temporary License, complete the approved Fellowship and be Board Certified in Rheumatology, and demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills with strong potential for a leadership role within the department.
