Schedule: Full-Time/Day

Shift: Tuesday (6:30am-12:00pm) Class (1:00pm-5:00pm), Wednesday (6:30am-4:00pm), Thursday (6:30am-12:00pm) Class (1:00pm-5:00pm), Friday (6:30am-4:00pm), Saturday overnight (ON CALL) 5:00pm-6:00am

Location: Hinsdale & La Grange (traveling required)

The role you’ll contribute:

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Residents are spiritual care ministers and members of the healthcare team. The CPE Resident is committed to the mission of extending the healing ministry of Christ. The CPE Resident is enrolled in an educational program, learning through practice and reflection the art and discipline of spiritual care for patients, families, and employees. As the CPE Resident learns, he/she becomes more skilled in the provision of care to those persons – from many backgrounds, belief systems and ages – from birth to geriatrics. The CPE Resident reflects a diversity of spiritual and professional gifts. Each CPE Resident may be involved in providing care in a variety of areas of the hospital, and perhaps on a variety of campuses in the region, and/or may be more involved in a certain area or with a certain age group or demographic. Regardless of where they are serving, the CPE Resident will be expected to learn effective ways of caring for persons with a variety of spiritual needs, religious values, beliefs and practices of all faiths; responding in a way that communicates compassion, empathy, respect and dignity with care. CPE Residents actively participate in outstanding customer service and accept responsibility to maintain relationships that are equally respecting of all.

  • Utilize knowledge of the levels of growth, development, and skills for pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric care for purposes of clinical spiritual ministry and clinical spiritual leadership.
  • Engage fully in learning and ministry, maintaining investment in personal learning and growth as well as the art and skill of spiritual care giving.
  • Responsible to the Director of Ministry Education and the CPE Resident's ACPE Certified Educator. Maintains communication, collaboration, and accountability with leaders in the Department of Spiritual Care.
  • Provide regular and consistent spiritual care to patients and their families as scheduled and appropriate, without exception, regardless of faith, ethnicity, race, gender, sexual orientation, social or financial status, always caring for patients and staff with respect and dignity. Maintaining professional ethical standards as described in department policy and by ACPE, Inc.
  • Work closely with nursing and other care team members to discuss issues of patient care and to provide support during personal and/or spiritual crises.
  • Take on-duty and on-call as assigned and scheduled, communicating professionally with others any schedule changes that may be necessary.
  • Conduct devotional services and chapel services as assigned.
  • Make routine spiritual care contacts, connect with pre-surgery patients, nursing units, and respond to crisis calls appropriately and in a timely fashion when on duty.
  • Perform duties and spiritual care ministry in compliance with the Policies for the Department of Pastoral Education, Department of Mission and Ministry and the Department of Spiritual Care.
