PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The Assistant Histocompatibility Laboratory Director is responsible for acquiring the knowledge, skills, expertise and credentials necessary to qualify for the position and prepare to independently perform the responsibilities of an Associate Clinical Histocompatibility Laboratory Director. The Assistant HLA Laboratory Director will work under the supervision of ASHI credentialed Histocompatibility Laboratory Director(s).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs all assigned duties in compliance with internal SOPs and external regulations. Brings compliance issues to the attention of management.
Assures quality customer service to all customers.
Master the technical and clinical aspects of histocompatibility laboratory testing including, but not limited to: HLA typing, ABO typing, cross-matching and antibody testing, including maintaining quality and uniformity.
Assist with the development and implementation of new histocompatibility programs to improve patient care and adjust to the changing state-of-the-art.
Assist and advise in the management and development of laboratory staff that will perform test procedures, record and report test results promptly, accurately and proficiently.
Obtain the expertise to advise referring physicians and transplant coordinators regarding the significance of test results.
Assist the credentialed HLA Laboratory Director to support the relevant administrative, financial, laboratory operations and clinical aspects of transplantation.
Assist the credentialed HLA Laboratory Director with quality control, quality assurance, quality improvement and ethical issues as they relate to histocompatibility testing.
Conduct continuing education presentations for HLA Laboratory staff.
Become knowledgeable of the various regulatory and accrediting agencies and their requirements that apply to the HLA laboratory.
Develop a portfolio of cases reviewed in accordance with the American Society of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI) Director Training Review and Credentialing Committee (DTRC) Requirements, as applicable.
Performs all other duties, at the discretion of management, as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge/Education
MD or PhD in Biological Science with a minimum of 2 years of post-doctoral training in immunology, histocompatibility, immunogenetics, or a related field, or a residency in clinical (or a combined anatomic/clinical) pathology or other related medical specialty required.
Licenses/Certifications
Possess applicable state license(s) required.
Passed the American Society of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ABHI) Clinical Histocompatibility Technologist (CHT) or Clinical Histocompatibility Specialist (CHS) examination preferred.
Experience
Meet requirements to register with ACHI as a Director in Training (DIT) or have completed registration as a DIT required.
Living and Deceased Solid Organ Transplantation, Transfusion Support, Related and Unrelated HSC/BM Transplantation, and Histocompatibility testing for Other Clinical Purposes. Incumbent will be required to apply for ACHI credentialing in a minimum of 2 of the primary transplant support areas within 2 years preferred.

Must be able to maintain confidentiality.
Possess and maintain applicable state licenses.
