This position is based in the Piscataway, NJ office and is flexible for a hybrid (in-office and remote) work schedule.
Job Summary
The overall purpose of this position is to ensure good standing with US taxing jurisdictions as it pertains to IEEE's operations and to make and implement recommendations on tax strategies by researching, interpreting, and implementing tax solutions that optimize the organizations tax obligations. The person in this position manages the domestic tax team, and identifies, develops, and executes solutions for highly complex tax compliance functions for the US, and directs the formulation and monitoring of the company's domestic tax compliance. This role is responsible for developing, mentoring, and providing guidance and ongoing career development to domestic tax staff team, and for managing the daily operations of the domestic tax department but receives general direction on strategic priorities and objectives. This position is expected to work independently, with minimal supervision, and with ability to prioritize multiple projects and deadlines.
The tax senior manager primarily responsibilities include:
Manage and lead domestic tax team
Federal, state, and local tax reporting and compliance
Non-profit
Income tax
Sales and use, including nexus studies
Defining requirements and recommending plans and resources needed to meet future tax reporting and compliance requirements
Monitor changes that affect the organization and oversee implementation of appropriate tax planning solutions
Recommending tax strategies by researching federal, state, and local taxation issues
Research tax rules and regulations
Evaluates proposed and enacted tax laws and communicates to management the impacts to company operations
Identify areas of tax savings by analyzing tax information
Interface with volunteers, staff, and professional tax advisors to resolve complex issues
Educates volunteers and staff regarding tax processes and requirements
Makes recommendations for business and process improvements
Maintain, revise, and streamline procedures for tax processes
Works with IT staff on all technical matters relating to tax applications.
The role reports to a manager level and manages a team of 3-4 direct and/or indirect reports.
This position proactively works under general guidelines by following established procedures and is expected to provide leadership and proactive directive in tax planning, tax accounting, tax compliance, and audit defense. This position is expected to effectively coach and lead others.
Key Responsibilities
Tax Compliance
Manage the preparation, review, and timely filing of federal, state, and local tax returns:
Consolidated federal, state, and local income tax returns
Forms 990, 990-T, 990-PF and related state charitable and income tax returns
State and local sales and use tax returns
Other required statutory reporting
Resolving complex issues as they arise
Provides advice and assistance with return preparation, and reviews tax returns prior to filing
Maintains the tax calendar, assigns tax returns to staff
Reviews and maintains the tax provision schedules
Manages cross-departmental accounting and tax issues
Manages IRS and state tax audits as needed
Supports international tax team as needed
Tax Planning
Regularly reviews tax policies, processes, and internal controls; proactively suggestions and implements enhancements as needed.
Research tax laws, recommend tax strategies, provide advice to management, and apply chosen solutions. Coordinates with international tax team as needed.
Improve efficiency and controls
Review reconciliations, and suggest areas in need of improvement
Manage project plans for the technology requirements to comply with the tax regulations or automation of processes
Problem Solving
Provide advice, guidance, and assistance to staff and volunteers with respect to domestic tax issues
Respond accurately and timely to inquiries from internal and external customers and make recommendations when appropriate
Lead independent contractor analysis and review of complex issues as they arise
Review and resolve issues that arise with the enterprise transaction tax system or government taxing jurisdiction and manage duties for the tax engine
Perform compliance risk and tax contingency analysis

Skills and Requirements
Experienced tax professional with expertise in both tax exempt and for-profit organizations - able to demonstrate a high level of compliance, consulting, and tax research proficiencies.
Effective interpersonal skills to ensure that tax compliance plans are created that address the needs and known constraints of the IEEE enterprise.
Must be able to identify and analyze issues and problems and recommend and implement solutions for tax and statutory reporting requirements.
Must demonstrate the highest degree of professionalism when dealing with sensitive and/or confidential matters.
Positive attitude and a supportive, team-based approach towards the attainment of goals
Ability to successfully prioritize and lead several projects simultaneously to completion
Must have soft skills including communication (written/verbal), negotiation, change management, organization skills, self-starter and independent work style, and inter-personal skills with a divergent set of clients and departments.

Proficient in various computer applications including tax software (direct and indirect tax applications), Google suite products, and Microsoft Office suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. ERP system experience a plus.
