Assistant Directors assist in developing policies, procedures, and programs that support the Office of Residence Life, the Division of Student Life, and the Colleges mission. This position will also support the Director of Student Engagement and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). Primary functions include working with students and staff, programming, advising student groups, facilitating the student conduct process, and responding to student emergencies after regular working hours. This is a live-on position that requires a high level of campus visibility with routine evening and weekend commitments. The Assistant Director serves as part of the Residence Life leadership team giving particular attention to DEI initiatives centered on the residential experience. The Assistant Director is expected to be an active contributor to the Division of Student Lifes overall goals, strategies, and responsibilities. This position reports to the Director of Residence Life and the Director of Student Engagement and DEI. At all times, the Assistant Director models respect for student concerns, respectful engagement with College constituencies, and supports the College mission. Utilizing exceptional communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, the Assistant Director establishes collaborative relationships within the division and various campus resources beyond Student Life.
Responsibilities:Within the Division of Student Life, this position will create, develop and assist in providing oversight of residence life and student engagement initiatives. Specifically:
Assist with the coordination and development of campus cultural activities and programs celebrating diversity and promoting belonging broadly inclusive of race, ethnicity, LGBTQ+, gender, ability, age, class, religious affiliation, and culture
Assist with advising affinity groups and DEI-related student clubs and organizations ranging from service, cultural, political, religious, and special interest
Assist supervisors with regular training for student leaders and faculty advisors
Serves as a regular contributing member of the Student Life staff, assisting with division-wide programs and student retention initiatives, including but not limited to assisting with the Early Alert response teams coordination
Assist with on-site support and supervision of events for the campus community
Develop a peer DEI educator program that will allow the Assistant Director to mentor, train, and evaluate undergraduate students
Assist with the training and ongoing development of three full-time Area Directors as needed and, by extension, approximately 45 student staff members as directed
Design and promote activities supplementing the residential experience that build community and meet a diverse student populations developmental needs
With staff and student input, create educational programming to positively influence student growth, including developing interpersonal skills, healthy lifestyle and personal choices, engagement with social justice issues, appreciation of diversity, improved understanding of consensus decision-making, and peaceful conflict resolution
Maintain and administer programming budgets as assigned
Articulate rationale of College and office policies and expectations. Staff must also appropriately confront and document violations of College policies and ensure timely recording, reporting, follow-up, and referral for all policy violations and behavioral issues
Serve as an administrative hearing officer as part of the student conduct process and willing to be trained and serve as a Title IX Investigator for the Office of Title IX as needed
Act as a liaison for Earlham College with students, parents, and community members related to the divisions administration and operations
Serve in the Residence Life on-call rotation during weekdays, weekends, holidays, and College breaks; be available to respond to residential and campus crisis issues
Promote and model positive support for the Colleges and divisions goals and demonstrate ethical student affairs practice
Serves on College and Student Life committees as appointed
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Graduate degree in student personnel, higher education, or a related field preferred
Minimum of three years experience of full-time professional experience in Residence Life
Ability to communicate successfully with people from diverse backgrounds and an expressed commitment to uphold and further Earlhams Diversity Aspirations Vision Statement
Knowledge and commitment to student development theory and the changing needs of college students are essential
Ability to design, implement and assess training and programming curricula
Previous experience related to DEI education and training strongly preferred; willingness to partner with campus colleagues in the co-curricular development of leadership and diversity competencies for students
Basic proficiency with technology and social media; previous budgetary management
Understanding retention issues related to equity, inclusion, persistence, and wellness and a commitment to creating spaces where students feel safe, valued, and heard
Demonstrated commitment to diversity in all forms, teamwork, and ethical student affairs practice with a commitment to student affairs and education broadly and a genuine desire to grow professionally and contribute to student life
Excellent communication skills, energy, and enthusiasm with a demonstrated understanding of the role modeling expectations of a live-in staff member, healthy personal boundaries, and a desire to mentor students
Clear understanding of residence lifes role at a private residential liberal arts college, including the expectation to know their residents and a commitment to high visibility within the residence halls and throughout campus with regular evening and weekend availability required
Valid drivers license is required
Desired Qualifications:
Proven experience and competence in assisting with coordinating diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and educational programming
Demonstrated knowledge and experience utilizing a theoretical foundation related to the principles and practices of leadership development and student development
Familiarity with the principles of consensus, sustainability, and a culture of global concern
International immersion experiences (i.e., study abroad, volunteer service, etc.) are preferred
Familiarity and/or experience working with Banner and Maxient is preferred
Experience advising student groups and/or themed residential communities is preferred
Experience with assessment and student conduct is preferred
