The role acts as a key role in supporting international students, active and prospective, in their adjustment and adaptation to Valparaiso University and life in general in the United States; as well as serving as a resource to the university campus departments on key issues faced by international students prior and after arrival at Valparaiso University.
Major Responsibilities:
Immigration related duties: Creation and maintenance and update of immigration documents and records (I-20/DS-2019) and the sending of admission documents to admitted students
Answer questions regarding admission when needed
Assist with SEVIS registration and international students' data and reports
Maintain SUNAPSIS templates and checklist
Assist and advise the Valparaiso International Student Association (VISA) and other international student groups in creating and implementing events for the student body
Manage admitted international student arrival information for various offices to see and/or work closely with the grad and undergrad admissions offices to coordinate this effort
Assist with collection of information and m-range for arrival, moving into housing, orientation, and work closely with Residential Life
Respond to various non-SEVIS, non-academic needs of international students upon arrival
Participate in new student pick up from bus stop or airport
Process administrative procedures to collect information from students; revise/distribute all information related to the orientation and file collected information
Work with other offices and businesses to coordinate the orientation schedule
Develop and market various programs and events designed to engage students and the broader university community with a special focus on events that integrate both the international and non-international communities on campus. Compose newsletter to VU community and manage social media content
Social security administration for employment, BMV for registration, title, license, ID, Banks for accounts, landlords for housing, NIPSCO, Comcast, Verizon, etc.
Drive the students to these places on an 'as need' basis and help them with these benefits
Process and respond to special admissions cases such as incomplete documentation, deferrals, transfers, readmissions, and change of level
Process Change of Status applications and assist with other SEVIS functions as a DSO/ ARO
Answer questions for office procedures for extension and travel endorsement. Other DSO/ ARO related tasks as assigned
Serve as a liaison in monitoring international students with academic concerns, including notices in Starfish and Academic Action lists, and connecting them to on-campus resources as needed.
Knowledge and skills:
Bachelor's degree
Minimum one year prior experience in international education or related setting
Experience working with ELS and knowledge of a foreign language
Preferred previous experience interacting directly with university students
Strong organizational skills
Attention to detail
Strong customer service skills
Cultural understanding and sensitivity
Cross-cultural background, living, working, or study abroad
Must be able to work flexible hours and some evenings and weekends
Self-motivated and able to meet deadlines ln a fast-paced environment
