Development Scientist I/II, Enzymatic Assay Development at New England Biolabs, Inc.

Job Description:

New England Biolabs (NEB) is seeking a driven scientist with a background in enzymology or biochemistry. The person in this role will work with a diverse team of scientists to develop molecular biology assays and/or optimize existing assays with a focus on transfer to our GMP-Grade facility. The ideal candidate will be proficient in developing and validating new methods. This role will include development of biochemical assays and analytical test methods to support new product development as well as existing products across different product areas. This position is based in our new research and development facility in Beverly, MA.

Primary Responsibilities:


  • Develop and transfer enzymatic activity assays and analytical methods in conjunction with scientific staff for a variety of different RUO and GMP-Grade enzymes to support quality control


  • Establish biochemical assays using a variety of readouts and technologies


  • Support product development with analytical testing, method development, and troubleshooting


  • Design, plan, and execute experiments, either independently or in collaboration with another team member


  • Maintain excellent documentation and communicate results clearly to other team members and stakeholders


  • Organize, support, and collaborate with other team members to meet project deliverables and timelines


Required Qualifications and Experience:


  • Ph.D. or MSc in biochemistry, molecular biology, chemistry, or related field


  • Strong biochemical and molecular biology background


  • Strong scientific integrity and data analysis


  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects


  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills


  • Goal oriented team player with a strong work ethic


  • Experience with assay development, including identification of optimal methods as well as method integration into existing workflows


  • Experience with enzymatic activities covering a broad range of molecular biology techniques and enzymes including polymerases, nucleases, phosphatases, ligases, and other nucleic acid modifying enzymes


  • Diverse experience with common laboratory instrumentation and assay technologies including qPCR, fluorescence plate readers, colorimetric and fluorescence assays, liquid chromatography, etc.


Preferred Qualifications and Experience:


  • 2-4 years relevant experience


  • Experience with method validations and method transfers


  • Theoretical and/or practical knowledge of specialized instrumentation and analytical technologies such as UPLC, capillary electrophoresis, etc.
