Job Description:

The Assistant Controller is a key member of the Finance Team, with a detailed understanding of the operation of a large healthcare institution. The incumbent has a full understanding of the entire financial accounting, forecasting and budgeting process of the company, utilizes accounting knowledge to perform duties including maintaining general ledger and related financial records, preparing and analyzing monthly financial statements for both internal and external customers, performing financial analyses, and other related projects. Responsible for ensuring the reliability of financial records, report and explain financial results accurately and in a timely manner to internal and external customers.

The incumbent always strives for continuous improvement, utilizing value based skills to aim for best practices. Strong written and verbal communication skills, customer service focus, and proven analytical ability are requirements of the position. Prior budget management and financial project management experience a requirement.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS and RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Responsible for ensuring the accuracy of the financial statements in accordance with GAAP and compliance to internal policies.

  • Responsible for coordinating the monthly financial closing process; ensure accuracy of information and conformity with generally accepted accounting principles, proper distributions of revenue & expenses by department, reconciliation of general ledger balance sheet accounts, as well as specific income statement accounts.

  • Responsible for managing the accounts payable and payroll staff, ensuring disbursements are made timely and tax returns are filed accurately and on a timely basis

  • Responsible for the preparation, analysis, and distribution of the monthly financial reports.

  • Maintain general ledger accounts, divisions, departments, and other segments to achieve accurate and meaningful financial reporting and analysis.

  • Responsible for creating and monitoring internal controls to minimize risk of financial misstatements and fraud.

  • Coordinate all external audit of financial records.

  • Responsible for reviewing and ensuring balance sheet accounts are reconciled and properly stated on the financial statement.

  • Provide financial analysis as required to assist management to understand financial performance including current trends, historical trends, areas of opportunity and areas of concern.

  • Responsible for attaining and maintaining in-depth knowledge of software functionality, serving as the application coordinator for Finance owned processes.

  • Responsible for maintaining the application security of software to ensure proper segregation of duties.

  • Responsible for coordinating accounting software upgrades, testing applications, implementing new features, and coordinating issue resolution and ongoing support activities.

  • Develop financial, forecast, budget and ad-hoc presentations for CFO, Finance Committee, Operations and Executive leadership.

  • Track and investigate monthly financial variances. Prepare reports on monthly, quarterly and annual financial performance for CFO, Finance Committee, Operations and Executive leadership. Provide data in venue appropriate format with insight into trends or conclusions observed from data.

  • Responsible for attaining and maintaining in-depth knowledge of financial reporting and budgeting software; and help train and educate clinical and business associates in its operation and use. Have broad understanding of financial data architecture including but not limited to Epic, data warehouse, workday etc.

  • Develop ad-hoc financial and operational analyses as requested.

  • Become a subject matter expert not only in technical details but broader processes and business plan support.

  • Grow others including operations, teammates and colleagues.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:


  • Strong technical knowledge of accounting rules and practices.

  • Skilled in written and verbal communications with the ability to effectively articulate a point.

  • Performing analyses and creating reports on spreadsheet software. Strong advanced Excel skills required.

  • Skilled in the use of word processing software.

  • Skilled in the use of accounting software. Great Plains and Workday preferred.

  • Ability to design and maintain both physical and computer file systems.

  • Ability to design, chart our and articulate a workflow process.

  • Ability to maintain data and information confidentiality.

  • Ability to perform basic and complex mathematical calculations.

  • Ability to meet deadlines and operate effectively under pressure.

  • Ability to perform assigned responsibilities to successful conclusion with limited direction.

  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to shift work load as needed to accommodate organizational priorities.

  • Performing analyses and creating reports on spreadsheet software. Strong advanced Excel skills required.

  • Proficiency with accounting software and spreadsheet software.

  • Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and application.

  • Strong organizational skills.

  • Ability to consistently meet deadlines.

  • Attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Ability to recognize issues and present alternatives for resolution.

  • Strong analytical ability.

  • Good interpersonal skills to interface with internal and external customers.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage Accounts Payable and Payroll staff.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting.

  • Minimum 6 years' progressive experience in general accounting, supervision, budgeting, and management reporting/analysis.

  • Budget management and financial project management experience required in a large, complex business with over 60 departments and $250 million in revenue.

  • Healthcare experience is strongly preferred.

  • Designation as a Certified Management Accountant or Certified Public Accountant is preferred.

  • Access experience preferred.
