Job Description
Reports to the Coordinator/Director. Operates basic mammography equipment and uses ionizing radiation to make quality mammography radiographs. Performs medical x-rays on clients, as directed by physicians, according to established policies and procedures. Assists the Radiologist as needed. Contributes to a complete clinical history on each client. Participates in educational programs for the community.

Job Responsibility
Operates basic mammography to make quality radiographs and administers medical x-rays on patients by:

  • Performing mammography examinations on clients, as directed by physicians, using ionizing radiation and correctly adjusting the mammogram equipment (i.e., voltage, amperage/ time and accessories).

  • Ensuring that a complete clinical history has been obtained for each patient, appropriately answering the patient's questions and, if necessary, referring them to the appropriate Physician or staff.

Assuring that all personal requirements by Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) have been met and assisting in the MQSA compliance of the department by:

  • Maintaining personal licenses and assuring that the minimum number of mammograms and CEU's have been met.

  • Assisting with all quality control of equipment as assigned by the Coordinator and/or the Director.

Operates basic ultrasound equipment to make quality ultrasound images on patients by:

  • Performing breast ultrasound images on patients as assigned by Radiologists.

  • Performing proper maintenance of ultrasound equipment as assigned.

  • Ensuring that proper number of CEU's are obtained in breast ultrasound to maintain the American College of Radiology (ACR) accreditation.

Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:

  • Ordering supplies and keeping the mammogram room and examination room stocked with supplies.

  • Maintaining a general orderly clinical atmosphere and appearance..

  • Helping to develop and present educational programs to interested groups within the community.

  • Orients and trains new staff, students, etc., to familiarize with Mammography.

  • Completing other job-related duties and projects as assigned.

  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

  • Maintaining personal licenses and assuring that the minimum number of CEUs have been met.

  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process, and compliance.

  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.

  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies, and department specific education within established timeframes.

  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.

Job Qualifications
Education and Experience
  • The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through successful completion of an approved School of Radiology Technology program, with registry by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Maintenance of certification in Mammography and three months of on-the-job training is required.
Knowledge & Skills

  • Demonstrates expertise in Mammography and Ultrasound techniques.

  • Requires the ability to obtain satisfactory mammograms and accurate records, correct inaccurate records and select proper techniques, correct paddle size, position and alignment of beam.

  • Requires the analytical skills to evaluate results to achieve and maintain quality assurance standards.

  • Demonstrates an interest in scientific and technical knowledge to master the principle techniques to obtain radiographs with minimal exposure to the client.

  • Demonstrates the verbal communication skills needed to conduct presentations (for community groups) and answer questions regarding mammography.

  • Demonstrates the ability to understand verbal and written instructions, which are stated in radiologic and medical terms.

  • Demonstrates proficiency in basic computer skills (i.e., data entry, word processing and spreadsheets).

  • Demonstrates expertise in the use of the PACS system including retrieving and sending images, printing images and merging outside cases on PACS and SCWS.

  • Demonstrates the ability to create a warm and friendly atmosphere for the client and to ease apprehensions.

  • Demonstrates the interpersonal skills needed to maintain professional interactions with physicians, team members and clients.

Working Conditions

  • Works in a radiological environment with possible exposure to radiation.

  • Wears lead protective aprons and gloves during certain procedures; also must wear film badge and maintain strictly-controlled standards.

Physical Demands
  • Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e. to walk/stand for prolonged periods of time, push carts/wheelchairs up to 50 pounds, to position/lift patients at a maximum of 35 pounds unassisted, over 35 pounds requires assistance, provide CPR, etc.) to perform the essential functions of the position. Also requires the manual dexterity to adjust machine controls or change, attach and adjust devices or accessories.
