This position is in our College Utilities Corporation Department. The position is responsible for performing operations and maintenance on water and wastewater utility infrastructure as well as construction of new water mains and sewer mains and associated infrastructure.Reports to

College Utilities has an opportunity for a Utility Operator in Fairbanks, AK. The position is responsible for performing operations and maintenance on water and wastewater utility infrastructure as well as construction of new water mains and sewer mains and associated infrastructure.

The selected candidate must obtain the required ADEC certifications for the level rating of the utilities within four (4) years of hire.

The selected candidate must obtain and maintain a valid State of Alaska Commercial Driver's License within one (1) year of hire.

What you'll do


  • Perform preventative maintenance on water and wastewater utility infrastructure
  • Perform general mechanical overhaul and repair work on fire hydrants, circulating stations, gate valves, lift stations, pumps, and motors
  • Perform basic electrical troubleshooting and maintenance at lift station and circulating station control panels
  • Operate heavy equipment such as dozers, excavators, and vactor trucks
  • Perform maintenance on vehicles and equipment
  • Inspect, adjust and replace parts to ensure the effective functioning of equipment
  • Purchase parts and supplies to make repairs
  • Weld and modify equipment and fabricating parts
  • Maintains appropriate records of parts, supplies and work performed
  • Pump and lift station maintenance
  • Performs other related work as assigned

What you bring

Experience

  • Three (3) years' experience in dirt work construction and heavy equipment operations

Education

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Possess a valid State of Alaska Driver's License throughout employment

Nice to Have

  • State of Alaska Commercial Driver's License
  • Experience or education in operations and maintenance of water and wastewater utility infrastructure
  • Experience or education in automotive work or mechanical work
  • Electrical experience
  • Welding experience

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • High level of proficiency in the use of rubber tire backhoes/loaders, Dozer use, Dump truck operations, Excavators, Compactors in all types of weather conditions
  • High level of proficiency in using all large commercial road equipment such as pumper truck, tilt top trailer, vactor, jet truck and flat beds
  • Ability to work safely and use sound judgment while operating around or near other buried utilities
  • Knowledge of the tools, equipment and technology used in the repair and maintenance of any mechanical equipment
  • Knowledge of basic electrical principals
  • Knowledge of the occupational and environmental hazards and safety
  • Knowledge of the principles of pumps and motors
  • Knowledge of hydraulic systems
  • Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions
  • Experience in and ability to interpret plans and sketches
  • Skill in the use and care of tools, equipment and materials of the mechanical trade
  • Interpersonal skills: self-awareness, emotional intelligence, patience, flexibility, active listening, dependability, conflict management and resolution
  • Ability and skill in working with customers in a professional, respectful, communicative, and timely manner
  • Problem solving skills

Physical Requirements:

  • Capable of lifting a minimum of 50 pounds above waist height (3 feet or higher).
  • Able to work in cramped, uncomfortable spaces with low light conditions.
  • Exhibit physical dexterity to work in awkward positions for up to one hour at a time.
  • Able to lift, pull or push for a significant portion of a workday.
  • Able to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions such as cold and snow for a significant portion of a workday.
  • Able to perform duties while standing, stooping, twisting, bending, kneeling or from prone position for up to an hour at a time.
  • Capable of extending arms overhead for extended periods of time while performing duties.
  • Capable of working in an environment where raw sewage is present.
  • Capable of working in either a crew environment or independently as required.
