Job Description:

SUMMARY

Under the supervision Chief, Viral and Rickettsial Diseases Laboratory (VRDL), the COVIDNet Project Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating incoming samples from COVIDNet partner labs, will manage sample data, monitor and reconcile invoices for sequence runs by COVIDNet partners, and produce summary reports of the genome sequencing data for internal and external use.  Duties will include management of patient records and specimens submitted for COVID testing and the state’s SARS-CoV-2 Whole Genome Sequencing Initiative (COVIDNet) and harvesting data from GISAID or other sequencing databases. The primary responsibilities of this position will include working with COVIDNet leads to coordinate COVIDNet specimen flow and communication with COVIDNet lab partners utilizing database management skills to organize and track these activities.

The salary for this position is $25.00/hour to $35.00/hour.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


  • Use databases such as StarLIMS and Access for data entry, locating patient information, routing samples for testing, and tracking pending samples.

  • Review laboratory results for accuracy and completeness, reports COVIDNet results to submitters, CDPH partners, and/or local health departments, and answers questions about appropriate specimen type(s) to submit and the method of packaging and transport.

  • Serve as a liaison between VRDL and its COVIDNet and non-COVIDNet partners to obtain, retrieve, and maintain epidemiological information for patient and specimen tracking.

  • Work with bioinformatics analysts to merge sequence data with epi data for tracking and reporting purposes.

  • Prepare and present summary reports and updates to internal staff, CDPH partners, and stakeholders.

  • Track COVIDNet shipments and reconcile invoices with shipment records.

  • Prepare shipping documents for send out to partners.

  • Assist VRDL Chief and COVIDNet Project Manager as needed.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


  • Assist monitoring COVIDNet fund balances.

  • Perform other duties as directed by the VRDL Chief. 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS


  • In depth knowledge of data management in both Excel and Access and the ability to troubleshoot.

  • Ability to track multiple facets of COVIDNet, including sample management and shipping records.

  • Incumbent must be able to effectively communicate orally and in writing with public health and healthcare professionals, and other CDPH employees.

  • Ability to prioritize and complete assignments in a timely and efficient manner.

  • Adhere to departmental policies and procedures regarding attendance, leave, and conduct.

Education/Experience


  • Bachelor’s degree in public health, biological sciences, or related field.

  • Prefer previous experience working or volunteering in a public health setting.

  • Data science background is a plus.

 General Office Setting, Indoors Temperature Controlled.  Office setting part time and remote part time.
