R&D Design Engineer at Hypertherm

Job Description:

Exciting opportunity to join the Heavy Industrial engineering team as an Engineer for the Plasma Design Engineering team. At Hypertherm, innovation is a valued ingredient of our success. In this role you will design and develop consumables and cutting processes for our Heavy Industrial plasma cutting systems working with a multi-disciplinary engineering team of electrical, mechanical, and software engineers.



Essential responsibilities of this role include:



  • Utilizes "best practice" design approaches including tolerance analysis, DFMA, DFMEA to produce optimal designs

  • Design, conduct, and analyze hands-on scientific experiments using prototyping, design of experiments (DOE), and statistical analysis to improve cutting techniques

  • Communicate and collaborate with engineers, managers, and technicians

  • Collaborate with marketing and operations to deliver compelling products and cutting solutions




Who you are and the experience you will bring:



  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering with 3+ years of hands-on design engineering experience.

  • Curious, self-motivated, and able to work independently as well as on a team.

  • Demonstrated product development experience in DFMA and ASME Y14.5 GD&T dimensioning practices, tolerance analysis.

  • Basic engineering instrumentation knowledge such as flow measurements, thermal measurements, oscilloscopes, data acquisition system.

  • Value Engineering/cost reduction in product design.

  • Experience in fluid/gas dynamics, thermodynamics, and heat transfer analysis for product development.




Preferred experience to differentiate you:



  • An advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or Applied Physics

  • Experience with robotic applications

  • Experience in welding and/or material science

  • Product development experience from concept to launch

  • Proficiency with SolidWorks

  • Experience with thermal modeling and analysis
