Type: Full-Time
Location: Barnstable, Massachusetts

Job Description:

Akima Systems Engineering (ASE) supports the Intelligence, DoD, and Science and Research communities with tools, domain knowledge, analyst teams and essential mission staffing services. We continually seek people with the skills, experience and passion to successfully leverage the complete intelligence lifecycle across America’s most critical initiatives. As an Alaska Native Corporation (ANC), 100% of our company’s profits go back to our more than 14,000 Iñupiat shareholders that have resided near and above the Arctic Circle for more than 10,000 years. Our business helps support their way of life and contributes to the survival of a culture that has thrived in a challenging environment.

Job Summary:

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is responsible for conducting a wide range of geological, geophysical, biological and ecological research and mapping activities in the coastal and offshore regions of the U.S. continental margins, the Great Lakes, the Caribbean Sea, the polar oceans, and some international areas. The research addresses issues of local, regional, national, and global concern, such as natural hazards, environmental quality, living and non-living resources, and climate change. The research is carried out under the USGS Natural Hazards Mission Area, with links other USGS Mission Areas and Programs, as well as cooperative agreements with other agencies, organizations, and institutions. The fundamental goal is to develop a scientific understanding of Earth processes that contributes to decision making in coastal and marine environments.

Akima is hiring a Technician V position to support the USGS Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center (WHCMSC), Woods Hole, Massachusetts. The WHCMSC conducts a wide range of geological, geophysical, and oceanographic investigations of continental margins and adjacent regions in the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, the Great Lakes, and polar regions, as well as nationwide and worldwide. Activities address issues in environmental quality, natural hazards, resources, and information, and are principally carried out as part of the USGS Coastal and Marine Hazards and Resources Program within the Natural Hazards Mission Area, but also through other disciplines such as the Water Resources Mission Area, USGS programs, and through cooperatives and. agreements with other agencies and institutions. A major objective is to develop a predictive capability for sediment transport and hydrodynamics in a wide range of marine and coastal environments. This requires extensive modeling and field studies. The primary purpose of this position is to develop, test, and maintain numerical models for coastal-ocean processes, including atmospheric forcing, waves, tides, ocean circulation, water quality, benthic habitat, and morphological evolution.  The Technician V will participate in a broad multidisciplinary research program to utilize this modeling capability to address key issues in coastal and marine environments.

The Technician V will assist the WHMSC in developing, implementing, testing, and applying a coupled ocean-atmosphere-wave-sediment transport modeling system that will lead to an improved ability to model and predict geomorphic and oceanographic response of coastal systems to severe conditions such as drought and storms. This involves interacting with model code and software tools to develop and work with model input and output, test cases and applications, and documentation. Results will be useful for addressing scientific questions and societal issues in coastal oceans and estuaries.

The Technician V plays a supporting role in scientific advances by providing results, helping to understand the physical processes that occurred, helping to implement new algorithms and software, by applying the modeling system, and by interpreting model results in the context of meaningful problems. Timely delivery of software and model results, development of accurate, efficient, and well-written code, development of useful software tools; and clear, concise, and complete documentation of work are essential to the success of the research conducted by the Team.

Responsbilities:

  • Compile, organize and maintain realistic model applications including model forcing data and associated files:

    • Acquire, organize and format required input observational datasets (e.g., from online data repositories, project collaborators).

    • Apply computer code (eg MatLAB, Python) to create model forcing data for rivers, tides, meteorological and wave driven processes.

    • Prepare model grids with bathymetric datasets (e.g., CONED).

    • Compile and run model code (COAWST) on a supercomputer with prepared input files for idealized and realistic applications.

    • Manage model data output on both a standalone computer and a high performance computing (HPC) system.

  • Analyze and visualize data output for dissemination on databases and publications.

    • Perform data analysis on model output (e.g. compare model output with field observations, time series analysis) with provided tools and through code development (NCO, MatLAB, Python).

    • Evaluate model performance using quantitative skill assessments.

    • Aid in the scientific interpretation of model results, including isolating physical processes to improve understanding of estuarine circulation and coastal dynamics.

    • Prepare documentation for presentation of results for public and scientific meetings, peer-reviewed journal publications, and public distribution through government web portals.

    • Load data and metadata into databases following standard protocols.

  • Assist staff with formal publication of data and analyses as USGS reports or outside (peer-reviewed journal) articles.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of scientific concepts pertaining to nearshore processes, hydrology, fluid dynamics, physical oceanography, and marine geology.

  • Experience in applying numerical models of hydrodynamics, waves, and/or sediment transport in estuaries and/or coastal oceans to serve as a supporting team member in interdisciplinary modeling of coastal regions.

  • Skill in programming in Matlab/Python, some understanding of Fortran, and other programming languages such as C, Java, or Perl; and a basic understanding of Unix/Linux system administration, github or other code repositories.

  • Understanding numerical methods, parallel processing methods, and analytical techniques for visualizing and statistically analyzing large data sets.

  • Knowledge of data formats, conventions, and methods used to archive and distribute model data.

  • Skill in oral and written communication; development of information for communication through web pages.

  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks with minimal supervision

  • Equivalent to a Master’s degree in earth science, oceanography, or geography.

You must be able to meet all health requirements, including but not limited to, current and future vaccination requirements for infectious diseases such as COVID-19.
