Lead ED Technician (40hr, Day/Evening)







Department Description: The Emergency Department at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham is known for its advanced medical technology, child-friendly atmosphere, shorter wait times and a direct link to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. All Emergency Department physicians are board-certified and members of Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

Job Summary: Fully versed in all areas of department operations, performs as a member of a team responsible for completing all tasks necessary for the smooth functioning of the department. Assists with the flow of patients and providers to expedite services being provided. Orients and trains new emergency room technicians, and may assist with other annual training needs. Able to manage multiple clinical responsibilities which may include EKGs, phlebotomy, splinting, wound care, crutch walking, patient activities of daily living and post-mortem care. Provides assistance and support to the physicians, nurses, and other support staff as needed. Assists with clerical and receptionist duties. Adheres to hospital policy regarding patient confidentiality. Exhibits a willingness and ability to communicate self as a caring and respectful person, capable of sensitively responding to patients' needs.

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Performs competently and safely in clinical tasks of EKGs, phlebotomy, wound care, splinting, crutch walking, patient activities of daily living and post-mortem care.

  2. Primary responsibility for orientation and training, as well as completing associated documentation for all new ED Technicians, including any other periodic trainings for technicians.

  3. Orient new ED Technicians on safety to include: hourly rounding, fall precautions, escorting patients for toiletings, bed positioning, rails, and call light accessibility.

  4. Performs lab testing, specimen collection, according to protocol and communicates results to the appropriate department personnel and documents in the medical record. Inclusive of Point of Care Testing.

  5. Performs vital signs according to protocol and communicates results to appropriate department personnel and documents interventions in the medical record.

  6. Performs visual acuity testing competently and reports results to clinical nurse and ED attending.

  7. Performs oxygen saturation testing competently and reports results to clinical nurse and ED attending.

  8. Assists patients who have physical and psychological limitations with patient care functions which may include transferring from wheelchair to exam table, undressing and dressing patients and ensuring patient is safe until provider arrives.

  9. Assists providers in the delivery of patient care and special procedures such as pelvic exams and lumbar punctures.

  10. Provides Patient Observation when needed in compliance with the Hospital's policy on Patient Observation.

Required Qualifications:

  1. High School diploma or GED required.

  2. 0-1 years related work experience required.

  3. In lieu of High School Diploma or GED, equivalent prior related work experience may be substituted.

  4. Must be able to function in a calm, purposeful manner in highly stressful environment and demonstrates ability to work in a fast paced, highly demanding environment while juggling multiple priorities.

  5. Demonstrates mastery of emergency technician role and can coach and educate others to success including performing medical assisting, phlebotomy, EKGs, wound care, splinting, crutch walking and assisting with ADLs.

  6. Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and some Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. One or more years of college education/training in related field or equivalent work related experience

  2. MOAB training.

  3. CPR certification and First Aid training preferred, or must complete within 30 days of hire.

  5. Oral Communications: Ability to comprehend and converse in English to communicate effectively with medical center staff, patients, families and external customers.


  6. Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate full working knowledge of standard concepts, practices, procedures and policies with the ability to use them in varied situations.


  7. Team Work: Ability to act as a team leader for small projects or work groups, creating a collaborative and respectful team environment and improving workflows. Results may impact the operations of one or more departments.


  8. Customer Service: Ability to provide a high level of customer service to patients, visitors, staff and external customers in a professional, service-oriented, respectful manner using skills in active listening and problem solving. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.

Age based Competencies:
Employees in this job must be competent to provide patient care to the following age groups: Youth: 6 months to 16 years, Young adult: 16-30 years, Middle Age: 30 - 60 years, Elderly: 60 -.
Physical Nature of the Job:
Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or 50 pounds of force frequently. Work is physically demanding and requires extended periods of standing and/or moving.
