The mission of the Microbiome Discovery domain at L'Oreal Research & Innovation is to strengthen our understanding of skin & scalp microbiome to bring innovation and new technologies with proven efficacy. We work within an extensive international collaboration within R&I and with academic and startups in the domain of microbiome, dermatology, biotechnology to discover new target and bring them to proof of concept stage in vivo.

Lead North America Microbiome discovery programs: Advance the global domain's ambition and missions and with a focus on leveraging local hub's ecosystem and expertise, bridging science and consumer/product need gaps; Introduce new innovative technologies from the academic, startup and biotech environment to be developed in partnership within L'Oreal R&I for cosmetic benefits in the area of skin & scalp microbiome. The individual is expected to demonstrate project leadership, prioritize and champion technologies based on strong alignment with internal prioritized needs and technical value proposition. This high visibility position entails frequent presentations to internal stakeholders to share proposals, results and recommendations.

  • Lead the function of Microbiome discovery programs in north America under the direction of global Microbiome domain leader. Drive the internal and external partnership projects with the international Microbiome team, academic, startup and CROs to support the upstream innovation program related to skin & scalp microbiome application in cosmetic and skin health; this position closely works with external partners to design statement of work, co-direct research program, and ensure communication with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Identify novel scientific trends in microbiome research and strategic biotech partners; critically evaluate those opportunities and propose implementation steps to integrate in our portfolio of innovation; this position will work closely with our Open Innovation department and business development, to provide expert technical assessment of external opportunities. The individual is also expected to work collaboratively with our laboratories (microbiology, biology), statistical and bioinformatic group, and our clinical innovation team to gather evidenced-based proof of efficacy of the new concepts.
  • Operate in the US with a strong international connection with worldwide R&I team; Work closely with internal stakeholders such as clinical innovations teams, vitro labs, skincare labs, safety, patent, and regulatory departments to ensure feasibility and complementarity of technologies proposal
  • Be a contributor to US initiatives such as Inclusive Beauty knowledge and Green Science transformation
  • Ensure all administrative and operational tasks are accomplished with high efficiency and creativity and provide timely reports to appropriate stakeholders.
  • Supports scientific communication and publication

  • PhD in Microbiome research, Microbiology, skin Biology or Bioengineering
  • At least 7 years of experience in the field of Microbiome research; in-depth understanding of field of applications with at least 2 years of experience in an applied biotech, cosmetic, or relevant industries; previous people management and team management experience is required
  • Excellent organization, communication, and interpersonal skills; Foreign language such as French is a plus

  • Highly motivated, entrepreneurial, and enjoy working in a dynamic, challenging, and diverse environment; collaborate well in matrix international team
  • Independent, a critical thinker and problem solver
  • Available to travel domestically and internationally (~10%) in compliance with Local, State, Federal and international regulations
  • Authorized to work in the US on a permanent, ongoing basis without the need for sponsorship now of in the future
