Solvay's oilfield research group is involved in understanding the properties of fluids used in stimulating oil & gas wells. Increasing demand for deeper oil drilling requires formulation fluids that can perform in harsh conditions such as higher temperatures, high pressure, and brines with high salt content.

The Oil and Gas group is looking for an intern interested in laboratory experimental work and capable of working independently with guidance. He/she will be required  to learn the safety procedures at Solvay, develop good safety habits and document well every step of his/her work. The intern will gain knowledge about formulating and testing several surfactant and polymer based fluid systems. In particular He/she will:

1)     Familiarize him/her with the current literature on Oil & Gas stimulation fluids, their formation, stability and physical behavior

2)     Develop a good understanding of how several instruments operate and the best practice for sample preparation techniques

3)     Get involved in research projects aiming at developing new products and/or optimizing current ones

4)     Develop good practices in experiment recording in Lab Note Books and Result reporting

5)     Gain knowledge and understanding in the physical chemistry of formulations and the influence of composition and mixing dynamics on their performance properties.

6)     Gain first insight of product development in a corporate research environment.



The time-line of the internship is as follow:








1-2 week

Safety training; learn basic concept of the project, literature review, learn instrument operation and sample preparation procedure.

3-14 week

Conduct laboratory experiments- Develop new formulations and/or optimize the performance of the current formulations, and analyze data

14-16 week

Prepare report and presentation; summarize and present results.


This internship will provide the trainee a good opportunity to interact actively with industrial researchers in a corporate environment.  The experience to translate theoretical knowledge into practical applications and the skills obtained in this process during the internship will also help the trainee to achieve his professional objectives. The trainee will interact frequently with his/her supervisor, and the training will be under constant supervision.
