Overview


The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Adult Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner Fellowship is a one-year full time training opportunity to prepare a nurse practitioner to assume clinical, leadership and educator roles in adult palliative care specialty practice.This highly competitive training program is one of the few interprofessional training programs for advanced practice palliative care nurses in the US. The DFCI Nurse Fellowjoins an interprofessional class, the Harvard Interprofessional Palliative Care Fellowship, to train alongside 2 nurse practitioners, 6 physicians, andone pharmacist who share the goal of a career in specialty palliative care.

Training includes classroom teaching and clinical supervision by experts in the field with intensive feedback to promote the fellow's proficiency in the care of patients with serious illness or at the end of life.Fellows will achieve competence in management of pain and other symptoms, end of life symptom management, provision of psycho-social support for patients and families, and advanced communication skills.

Requirements


Elements of the Harvard Interprofessional Palliative Care Fellowship include:


  • Mentoring by expert advanced practice palliative nurses and interdisciplinary team members that include physicians, psychologists, social workers, chaplains, and pharmacists.

  • The fellowship conforms to the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association's Standards of Clinical Education of Hospice and Palliative Nurses.

  • Summer intensive classroom curriculum followed by weekly class that covers principles and domains of palliative care.

  • Clinical rotations with the inpatient Palliative Care Service at Brigham & Women's Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute Adult Palliative Care Clinic, home and inpatient hospice and community-based palliative care.

  • Elective rotations designed by fellow.

  • Retreats and curriculum on teaching, advanced communication skills, resiliency, health equity promotion, leadership, nursing research and career planning.

  • Scholarly project assignments include:


    • Quality improvement project

    • Podium presentation at Palliative Care Grand Rounds

    • Submission of an abstract and attendance at the 2022 Annual Assemblyhttp://aahpm.org/meetings/assembly

    • Teaching to a small group on clinical topic

    • Participation in Nursing seminars

Responsibilities:


  • Fulfillment of all requirements including didactics curriculum and scholarly assignments of the HarvardInterprofessionalPalliative Care Fellowship.

  • Comply with all job requirements of DFCI Nurse Practitioner.





Qualifications


Qualifications:


  • Masters or Doctorate in Nursing from an accredited program by January 2022.

  • Board certified or board-eligible by January 31, 2022 in Adult/Geriatric Primary Care, Adult Acute Care, or Family.

  • Licensure as a Certified Nurse Practitioner in MA required before start of fellowship (July 1, 2022).

  • Prescriptive authority for controlled substances in MA with DEA registration required before start of fellowship.

  • Prior experience as Nurse Practitioner preferred.

Schedule

Monday - Friday; 8-5 PM.

Temporary position from: July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023.

The fellowship is a non-union, grant-funded temporary position.

The salary is $68,500 which includes full benefits and 4-weeks' vacation.
