Principal Duties and Responsibilities





1. Performs all duties and responsibilities of cytotechnologist.





2. Collaborates with other technical coordinators to accomplish crosstraining of personnel among laboratory sections as appropriate. Coordinates training of new personnel as needed.





3. Assists in the establishment of policies and procedures, and in preparation of the operating budget.





4. Prepares work schedules and rotations to ensure effective coverage.





5. Coordinates inventory control process.





6. Monitors all quality control activities and rescreens quality control cases.





7. Consults with supervisor, pathologist, or laboratory manager on critical problems or unusual conditions.





8. Acts as the supervisor in his/her absence.





9. Effectively communicates with physicians, nurses, hospital, and laboratory staff to resolve problems.





10. Coordinates and monitors daily technical activities. Serves as staff resource for unusual and difficult technical problems.





11. Troubleshoots and maintains equipment; contacts service for repair as needed.





12. Keeps abreast of developments in the area of responsibility investigates new methods, procedures, etc.; and recommends application as appropriate.





13. Supports and participates in the hospital's commitment to Continuous Improvement. Through the development and use of objective data, plans, implements, and evaluates processes that result in the delivery of integrated services.








KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

1.Bachelor's degree and certification in cytotechnology, C.T. (A.S.C.P.).

2. Three years of clinical laboratory experience.

3.Good interpersonal skills required. Proficiency in the problem solving, trouble shooting, and judgement is necessary, as well as accuracy and efficient use of time and materials.

4.Some leadership experience preferred.

5.Ability to tolerate extended periods of visual acuity and mental concentration in a small room to interpret cellular changes and render accurate diagnoses of patient samples.

WORKING CONDITIONS

1. Exposure to biohazardous samples, and to possible carcinogenic chemicals.

2. Exposure to caustic agents, acids, fumes, and odorous chemicals.

3. Occasional prolonged standing.

4. Works under constant time deadlines.

5. Performs data entry with repetitive hand movement and visual concentration at video display terminal in order to review and enter data.

6. Requires manual dexterity using fine hand manipulations.


  1. Uses protective equipment as described in the Laboratory Policy and Procedure manual.

  2. Complies with precautions, as defined by Infection Control staff, in patients/materials requiring isolation.



  3. Consistently uses sharps safety devices as designed to prevent injuries to self.
