Provide broad testing leadership and support to product development, engineering, and quality activities using experimental and analytical techniques through supervision of test lab personnel and equipment using appropriate tools and methods. Optimize lab procedures, produce reliable test results, and serve as a point of contact for all lab related activities.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
General Responsibilities:
Carries out tests requested by Development Engineering, Advanced Development, Quality Assurance, Product Management, and Global Sourcing teams. Documents results professionally and communicates results to sponsor orally and in written form as required.
Develops, implements, and initiates vision and strategic planning for lab capabilities that are consistent with tests needs of various stakeholders.
Manges all lab activities including calibration and maintenance of equipment.
Specific Responsibilities:
Assigns and supervises Test Technicians to requested tests, scheduling, and coordinating their work to match assigned priorities, reviewing their tests and test reports to sponsor.
Conducts specialized and technical testing involved with regulatory agencies and product litigation supporting Development Engineering team for certification and compliance, as directed.
Determine applicable test standards for new product categories the company considers and becomes the expert on them, briefing Product Development teams as required.
Ensures maintenance of all test records and documentation of self and staff in Lab Management System and on personnel computer in conformance to ISO 9000 standards.
Demonstrate leadership by advising the Engineering Manager of technical seminars in pertinent areas of interest to the Lab. Furthermore, advise Engineering Manager of technological equipment and testing advancements to improve Lab testing capabilities.
Sources and contracts with outside testing services as required to support Roadmap projects and objectives.
Maintains and develops Test Standards, Report Formats, ISO Calibration Procedures and Lab Policies.
Recommends, sources, and procures experimental software compatible with lab and departmental computer resources. Investigates and recommends appropriate training for all appropriate personnel.
Maintains familiarity with all relevant and current test methodologies concurrently developing industry and regulatory contacts for advancements of Lab activities.
Develops, designs, recommends, and procures unique test equipment necessary to meet full range of engineering and reliability testing and to execute Engineering Lab functions in an efficient and appropriate manner.
Performs comparison tests between Char-Broil products and competitors as requested. Benchmarks competitor products to understand advantages and disadvantages of each product.
Create automated data analysis systems to automatically calculate results from data sets to reduce invested manpower
Create custom reporting structure to improve process from DAQ raw data to the reporting format.
Develops Expense and Capital Budgets for Lab operations with justifications and timeline implementation efficiently and within financial guidelines.
Responsible for Lab compliance to OSHA, NEC, NFPA and all applicable regulatory safety requirements.
Qualification Requirements
Minimum Education:
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Science, Math, or related technical discipline from an accredited college/university is required
Minimum Work Experience:
5 to 10 years' experience with an industrial manufacturer with direct test responsibilities in a lab environment
License(s) / Certification(s):
Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities:
Thorough familiarity with basic electrical, mechanical, and thermal measuring techniques.
Knowledgeable with lab operations such as accelerated weathering techniques, temperature measurement and data acquisition, infrared technology, materials testing, electrical component testing, gas flow testing, strain gages, compliance testing, and basic statistics.
Working knowledge of third party (UL, CSA, ETL, etc.) certification processes and procedures.
Should be a leader with ambition to develop Engineering Lab into a leading lab in the outdoor cooking industry.
Well-developed interpersonal skills with superior communication and presentation skills (oral and written)
Experienced in prioritizing and handling multiple complex projects simultaneously
Ability to work in a constant state of alertness.
Ability to work cooperatively with co-workers
Ability to have regular and predictable attendance.
