The Optical Engineering group at MIT Lincoln Laboratory is a specialized group of about 35 Optical Engineers and Optical Specialists/Technicians. We collaborate with Mission Divisions across the Laboratory, taking cutting-edge concepts andapplying all aspects of optical engineering to the development of prototype optical systems for:


  • Space domain awareness (imaging systems)

  • Communication systems (free-space lasercom)

  • Intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance systems (LADAR)

  • Electro-optical technologies

  • Homeland protection

  • Air and missile defense (imaging spectrometers)

  • Earth science and astronomy (telescopes)

MIT Lincoln Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) which conducts groundbreaking R&D to solve problems that are critical not only to U.S. national security, but to the advancement of science itself.


Summer Intern Optical Specialist (8-12 weeks):

As an Optical Specialist Intern, you will assist staff members working on a broad range of prototype systems. You willdevelop and use skillsin optical assembly, alignment, and testing and get a good sense of what it's like to work on prototype optical systems with capable teams.

As a summer intern in the Optical Engineering Group, you will assist staff members in working on a broad range of optical problems from system conceptual design, ray tracing and tolerance analysis, specification and oversight of optical component fabrication, and optical system alignment. You should be comfortable working with optical hardware and test equipment, and capable of creating and running optical models using ZEMAX or Code V. You must have demonstrated experience working in multi-disciplinary teams, excellent communication skills, and the ability to produce and present professional written and oral reports.

Requirements to apply:


  • Enrolled in a qualified Optical Technology career program, and have completed at least one year.

  • Demonstrated experience working in teams, excellent communication skills, and the ability to document your work and follow written procedures.

  • Be comfortable handling optics and working with common optical-mechanical hardware.


  • Have used some optical tooling (interferometers, alignment scopes, profilometers, inspection microscopes, and/or theodolites).

  • Have familiarity with optical fabrication techniques and specifications.

  • Must be aU.S. citizen, due to the unique nature of our work.

Education:

Completed at least your junior year in Optical Engineering with a GPA > 3.2.


Selected candidate will be subject to a pre-employment background investigation and must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret level DoD security clearance.
