Purpose Statement / Position Summary

This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the mission of Saddleback Medical Center and the Saddleback Medical Center Foundation. The employee shall support Saddleback Medical Center's strategic plan and participate in and advocate performance improvement/patient safety activities.

The Director, Gift Planning is responsible for the development and direct implementation of a robust and sustainable planned giving fundraising program benefiting Saddleback Medical Center (SMC). Reporting to the President, the Director will serve as the Foundation's subject matter expert on planned giving strategies, with a demonstrated and comprehensive understanding of the relevant legal, financial, and administrative regulations. The Director will work closely with the President to develop strategic goals and a creative approach for the planned giving program and will personally manage a portfolio of prospects and donors in Laguna Hills and across Orange County. This energetic fundraiser will have experience identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding planned giving donors, as well as working alongside major gift officers and organizational leadership to create sophisticated, blended gift proposals that benefit the organization and the donor.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job


  • Develop and implement an effective planned giving program that aligns with the values, goals and strategic plans of MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center Foundation
  • Develop, monitor and update a comprehensive long-range strategic plan including measurable goals and objectives for growing the effectiveness of the planned giving program
  • Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward current and prospective donors, in partnership with other gift officers and independently, working within the overall framework of the major and planned giving prospect management system
  • Manage a portfolio of 75 - 125 planned giving donors and prospects, creating custom qualification, cultivation and solicitation strategies and partnering with colleagues to develop meaningful, individual stewardship plans
  • In consultation with donors' advisers, provide donors with gift illustrations, legal and tax information regarding planned giving vehicles and life income gifts
  • With counsel, advise the Foundation and Medical Center on legal matters relating to planned giving, with specific regard for legal requirements and consequences; with the President and CFO, manage the Foundation's gift acceptance committee
  • Work with CFO to ensure appropriate documentation is obtained in order to substantiate gifts for productivity and financial reporting; effectively track all planned gifts in order to monitor receipt within legally mandated, or court specified time frames
  • Build a strong network of financial professionals (estate attorneys, financial/estate planners, realtors) to educate them about SMC and SMCF
  • Provide strategic oversight and content regularly in collateral creation, including newsletters, marketing material, recognition and proposals
  • Work with stewardship and events team to manage the Heritage Society; optimize the annual Heritage & Friends event to honor and steward major gift donors, planned giving donors and prospects
  • Maintain an active portfolio by maintaining regular, effective contact with donors through various activities and communications, with an emphasis on face-to-face meetings.
  • Develop annual budget for program
  • Maintain expertise in technical aspects of planned giving; maintain professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations

Essential Job Outcomes

  • Develop and implement Planned Giving Program at Saddleback Medical Center Foundation.
  • Maintain all aspects of Planned Giving Program for ensured sustainability and enhancement.
  • Actively manage portfolio of assigned planned giving donors and prospects.
  • Work proactively on long range planning to meet the future goals of Saddleback Medical Center Foundation.
  • Maintain all required compliance documentation in accordance with all rules and or applicable policy.
  • Work to solicit new prospects and future donors.
  • Collaborate with in-house and external legal counsel to provide updates related to planned giving news and legislative changes.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Experience

  • Five or more years in planned giving or related field at a large non-profit institution; strategic planning; proposal development; and planned giving portfolio management. Demonstrated experience and success with estate planning and major gift solicitation required.
  • Knowledge in areas of taxation, trust and estates, probate, corporations, contracts, and real estate is strongly encouraged.

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field of study required
  • Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE) and/or Certified Specialist in Planned Giving (CSPG) is preferred .
  • J.D. law degree and experience in the practice of law and/or accounting/financial planning is preferred.
