Mechanical & Electrical Trainee



Cleveland-Cliffs is the largest flat-rolled steel company and the largest iron ore pellet producer in North America. The company is vertically integrated from mining through iron making, steelmaking, rolling, finishing and downstream with hot and cold stamping of steel parts and components.

Cleveland-Cliffs is seeking hourly Mechanical and Electrical Training Employees to staff Maintenance Technician positions at our Indiana Harbor facility. Cleveland-Cliffs is a leader in employee safety, quality, and productivity.

Maintenance Technician candidates must successfully qualify on a computerized maintenance test to be considered for this position. Upon hire, Maintenance Technician candidates will enter a craft training program consisting of classroom and on-the-job training and must successfully qualify on job related factor tests.

Primary Responsibilities Upon Successful Completion of Maintenance Training Program:


  • Performs all mechanical/electrical functions necessary to maintain all operating and service equipment using standard and specialized tools and equipment.

  • Makes mechanical/electrical repairs as required in connection with their mechanical/electrical service.

  • Operates equipment in conjunction with repairs and provides assistance in operating functions as necessary to keep equipment running.

  • May work alone, with minimal supervision and works with other Maintenance Technicians and coordinates and works in conjunction with Operating Technicians and/or Service Technicians in the performance of mechanical/electrical maintenance tasks.


Qualifications and Requirements:


  • Be 18 or older and have legal right to work in the U.S.

  • Have a high school diploma or GED equivalency from an accredited institution

  • Be able to pass the Mechanical or Electrical Maintenance Technician testing at a score of 50 or more

  • Work rotating shifts, weekends, and overtime as required. Shift work may encompass 8, 10, or 12-hour work shifts

  • Must be willing to work at heights, climb and/or walk on uneven surfaces, and work in extreme heat and cold

  • Be able to successfully pass all pre-employment testing requirements

  • Be able to perform essential job duties, successfully pass a drug screen, background check, and a physical exam prior to starting employment


Preferred Requirements:


  • 3 years of experience in Mechanical or Electrical maintenance

  • Associate's degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology or Electrical Engineering Technology, or related field

  • Experience in an industrial manufacturing environment






Compensation and Benefits:


  • Starting hourly base rate of $25.69 - $28.25 per hour (based on test score) with a potential for additional earnings including production incentive pay, Sunday and Holiday premium pay, shift differential, and profit-sharing pay.

  • Upon successful completion of the Maintenance Technician training program, hourly base rate increase to $29.73 per hour.
