Job Description:

Ready to help us transform healthcare? Bring your true colors to blue.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts is a community-focused, tax-paying, not-for-profit health plan, operating as an independent licensee of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association. We manage approximately $17 billion in annual health care spending for our customers and employ a diverse workforce of 3,800 associates. The company was founded in 1937 to ensure that working families in Massachusetts could afford the cost of a hospital stay. Today, our mission is the relentless pursuit of quality, affordable health care with an unparalleled consumer experience.

Our Business

Businesses of all sizes and types rely on us to offer high-value medical, dental, life and disability benefits for their employees, matching the right coverage with innovative wellness and care management programs. Our customers include five of the 10 largest employers headquartered in Massachusetts, 24,000 businesses and 79 percent of the state's cities and towns.
Consistent with our corporate promise to always put our 2.9 million members first, we are rated among the nation's best health plans for member satisfaction and quality. We take pride in our ability to help our members when they are most in need of security and peace of mind. Whether we are helping members choose a physician, following up after an illness or hospital stay or making sure claims are paid accurately and on time, our associates are constantly focused on providing efficient and empathetic service.

Innovation

Our Alternative Quality Contract was developed in collaboration with clinicians more than a decade ago to reward doctors and hospitals for delivering high-quality, high-value patient care that keeps our members healthy. In 2019, our model's long-term, sustainable success was documented in a landmark New England Journal of Medicine study by Harvard Medical School researchers. Today, more than 80% of Massachusetts doctors and hospitals take part in the model, which has served as a blueprint across the country for plans serving millions of Americans.

At Blue Cross, innovation is a dedicated corporate function with the goal of rapidly identifying and developing new products, services and solutions. Our innovation team's approach is based on the design thinking methodology, which focuses on empathizing with consumer needs and adopting a hands-on, human-centered approach to solving problems. Our innovation team has used design thinking to create new programs that address the opioid crisis, new strategies to help make quality health care affordable, and new initiatives to help ensure that every individual's beliefs, traditions and wishes are respected when seriously ill. Additionally, in 2019 we opened a state-of-the-art innovation center in Boston - Well-B - where we bring together stakeholders from across the health ecosystem to reimagine the future of health care.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Diversity, equity, and inclusion is a core part of BCBSMA's business strategy. We value inclusion, pay equity, and the health and well-being of our workforce, and aim to create a culture where all associates feel they can bring their authentic selves to work. BCBSMA strives to create a more inclusive and culturally competent organization so it can better serve our communities and members across the Commonwealth. We do this through five key pillars:
* Career: we are committed to recruiting, respecting, and retaining an inclusive, developed workforce
* Commerce: we create and deliver products and services to meet our customers' needs through the lens of diversity
* Community: we support external partners to address the health and well-being of our diverse communities
* Culture: we continuously strive to achieve an effective and culturally competent organization through an inclusive workforce
* Care: we are committed to being a leader in addressing health disparities in our membership and communities

Community

Our approach to corporate citizenship is embodied in our deep commitment to helping all Massachusetts residents lead healthier lives. Every year, through donations, grants and sponsorships, we support the work of hundreds of not-for-profit organizations that are dedicated to healthy living. In 2020, we contributed $10.8 million to 473 organizations, and our employees volunteered more than 56,000 hours in communities throughout Massachusetts. In addition, the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Foundation, an independently governed non-profit organization established in 2001, collaborates with public and private organizations on research and policy initiatives designed to broaden health coverage and reduce barriers to care.
Overall, we have a significant economic impact in Massachusetts, with total premium and premium equivalents totaling 17.1 billion in 2020. We are legally classified as a not-for-profit health plan, but we pay substantial local, state, and federal taxes and assessments - in 2020, this number totaled $290 million. Our corporate headquarters are in Boston, and we also have offices in Quincy, Hingham and Worcester. We are online at https://www.bluecrossma.org/#.
