The Senior Packaging Engineer will assist the Manager in the identification, development, and commercialization of new, improved, and cost-reduced packaging while supporting the cross-functional project tasks. The Engineer will help to develop the design of packaging systems or equipment necessary to drive strategy and initiatives. This position is located in Wausau, WI. but will be directly reporting to our corporate office.
Job Responsibilities
Responsible for defining scope, RFP (Request for Proposal), line design, layout, AFE (Authorization for Expenditure), purchase, FAT, install, start-up, and follow-up.
Establish strong working relationships with key suppliers and facilitate project updates with suppliers.
Provide operating guidelines and parameters for all packaging run conditions.
Evaluate, research, and develop new/alternate materials, process methods, equipment
Prepare and present the results of a technical report to the leadership team, both written and oral.
Review and approve, interpret, develop, and issue technical specifications.
Manage materials to maximize operating efficiencies while containing/reducing expenses.
Foster the vendor selection and qualification process while ensuring new materials comply with GLC standards and expectations.
Collaborate with the Sales & Marketing teams to lead feasibility studies for new products.
Oversee special SKU Projects.
Work cross-functionally to ensure performance, product quality, and packaging capability goals are met.
Improve plant efficiencies through equipment automation.
Standardize and manage specifications and procedures relating to packaging and machinery applications to optimize finished product quality and performance.
Manage GLC Sustainability Program.
Manage GLC Packaging Specification System.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in Packaging or Mechanical Engineering.
7 years of Engineering experience or more.
Strong Capital Project Management Skills.
AutoCAD Proficient.
Strong written and verbal communications.
Knowledge of food packaging, preferably cheese or meat.
Ability to communicate with packaging material suppliers, packaging equipment manufacturers, and co-packers.
Up to 50% of travel.
Preferred Education and Experience
Experience in package commercialization.
Experience in attending customer visits to support the sales/marketing team.
• Occasional exposure to industrial operations including: temperature extremes from approximately 35°F to 100°F; noise levels in excess of 85 dB; moisture and moving machinery.
• Work is mainly performed in an office setting, with some time spent in a manufacturing environment
