Job Overview

The Electrical Engineering Manager will be responsible for shop floor electrical systems and shop floor controls & automation across the Great Lakes Cheese enterprise. This Manager will collaborate with all internal departments and external resources on electrical, controls and automation projects.

Job Responsibilities


  • Manage the electrical design, line controls and automation strategies of the shop floor environments.
  • Oversee the design, quality, consistency, compliance, and execution of control system projects in both cheese making and packaging plants.
  • Manage a team of controls plant specialists/engineers to successfully execute multiple concurrent projects.
  • Support the development and implementation of engineering standards, master specifications and best practices.
  • Apply automation solutions to meet site, enterprise, and business unit objectives for productivity, quality, and cost. Assist sites globally with technical planning, technology assessments, process control troubleshooting, downtime tracking and root cause analysis.
  • Ensure that automation solutions are compliant to minimize regulatory risk to the business.
  • Monitor and influence, when appropriate, changes in external codes and standards on GLC behalf, and work to ensure ongoing compliance within GLC.
  • Collaborate with internal IT resources to design and implement process network infrastructure (Ethernet, Device Net, Control Net, etc.).
  • Participate in safety upgrades/improvements across the enterprise where electrical/controls interlocking is required
  • Specify and procure enterprise projects involving: control panels, hardware, and field instrumentation. This may involve the design and implementation of small projects.
  • A working knowledge of the robotics (Fanuc preferred), Honeywell Technologies, Generators & transfer switches is desirable.
  • All GLC employees are expected to perform any assignment or job task according to the stated safety policies and procedures.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the manager.

Required Education and Experience


  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • 10 years of electrical engineering experience or more.
  • 5 years in a manufacturing or production environment.
  • Experience with development of Control System Function Design Specifications (FDS), Process & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID) & Process Flow Diagrams (PFD).
  • Technical expertise in the following automation platforms:
  • Conceptual knowledge of MES architecture.
  • Team player with strong analytical and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, contractors & service support resources.
  • Ability to make sound, independent decisions based on functional expertise and experience.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with suppliers, customers and coworkers.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and AutoCAD.
  • Familiarity with industrial standards including NEC, NFPA, and ANSI
  • Ability to travel up to 75% during project work.

Preferred Education and Experience


  • Master's degree.
  • Experience in dairy, cheese making, food and beverage, or consumer package goods industries.
  • WonderWare
  • MES experience.

Working Conditions

• Work is performed in an office setting.

• Occasional exposure to industrial operations including: temperature extremes from approximately 35°F to 100°F; noise levels in excess of 85 dB; moisture and moving machinery.
