Job Summary

Supports Solid Fuel-Fired Power Plant activities related to the chemistry laboratory, water treatment facilities and ensures environmental compliance relative to local, state and federal environmental regulations. Specifically, the employee is involved with sample collection, testing, monitoring and reporting functions to appropriate entities.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

Other duties may be assigned.  Directly or through others, the incumbent will:

• Promote a safe work environment by performing all work in strict adherence to established safety procedures and practices and actively participating in site safety programs and initiatives.
• Conducts diligent pre/post job meetings that provide value and effectiveness in maintaining worker safety.
• Utilizes HPI tools and encourages others in their daily use.
• Demonstrates a high competence in all routine duties and able to work through non-routine responsibilities.
• Demonstrates an understanding of the operating principles of all chemical/environmental monitoring systems and has the ability to troubleshoot these systems bringing resolution to any issues.
• Develops a deeper technical understanding in one of the core disciplines (air, water, waste, chemical).
• Use experience to make important decisions concerning vital equipment and take action when appropriate.
• Communicate problems concerning chemical/environmental upsets and assist in solving these issues with management and operations.
• Comprehensive understanding of all facility environmental permits and chemistry guidelines and the required documentation for compliance demonstration.
• Ensures E-PMs, PM’s, CEMS daily checks and calibrations are completed on all required equipment.
• Ensures all reporting events are accurately and consistently recorded and the records are maintained as required.
• Responsible for permit required reporting submission (Emissions Inventory, EDR Review, Annual Water Usage, etc).
• Assumes lead role in CAVS and assuring action items are completed on time.
• Provides mentoring to less experienced techs and fosters an atmosphere that promotes teamwork.
• Recommend and assist on O&M and capital projects from planning through completion through documentation and leadership roles.
• Assists in contractor oversight on special chemical and environmentally related projects.
• Have the ability to troubleshoot low voltage circuits and PLC issues.
• Develops a thorough understanding of the feed water cycle, water treatment systems, lab testing, scrubber performance, condenser inspections and associated instrumentation.
• Provide technical expertise for troubleshooting and resolution of chemical/environmental control and instrumentation systems.

Education, Experience, & Skill Requirements


  • Associates degree in science or related technical field and one (2) year experience as Chemical/Environmental Technician II OR five (5) years related work experience preferred.

  • Preferred skill requirements:  Proficiency in water chemistry operations, computer software applications (Maximo, PI, PHD, Stack Vision, Fleet Vision, ePeople, etc.), AC/DC electronics, and electrical troubleshooting.

  • Meets measures of success outlined for Chem/Environmental Tech II.

  • Understanding of environmental regulations and chemical guidelines particularly as they apply to coal fired power plants.

  • Provides the technical expertise and skills to perform routine system checks, calibrations and maintenance on environmental and chemical monitoring equipment.

  • Provides the technical expertise to collect, analyze and make data based decisions to ensure regulatory compliance.

  • Utilizes company software for work order tracking, purchase requisitions, inventory usage, etc.

  • Ability to provide accurate, detailed and organized documentation on all department activities.

  • Demonstrated continual self-improvement in job skills and knowledge.
