Who We Want

We are seeking an experienced Systems/Software/Controls Engineer to join our Laser Systems team in Plymouth, MI. This team designs and builds turn-key, automated opto-electro-mechanical systems that utilize lasers to mark, cut and weld materials across varied market segments. We're looking for a dedicated achiever that thrives in a fast-paced environment and will stop at nothing to ensure a project is complete and meets expectations. This person will effectively communicate, regularly share relevant status updates and effectively articulate issues and recommendations to senior management.

What you will do


  • Develop control software and commission custom laser processing tools for various applications (cutting, welding, marking...) over a wide range of industries (medical, aerospace, semiconductor...)

    • Custom HMI Development (C# .NET)

    • PLC/CNC programming (ST/Ladder/FBD/CNC [G-code])

    • Machine Vision (Cognex/Halcon)



  • Integrate all types of Class IV Coherent lasers into custom Class I laser work cells, develop laser controls, test laser function

    • CW to fs pulsing

    • UV to FIR wavelengths

    • mW to kW output power



  • Perform additional hardware/software configuration and calibration

    • Safety PLC programming (Pilz)

    • Controls/sensors hardware commissioning

    • Micron-level motion compensation



  • Troubleshoot unexpected hardware and software issues due to design/manufacturing flaws or non-conforming parts

  • Collaborate with applications experts to develop production process and parameters to realize customer requirements

  • Interact with internal/external customers to understand needs, develop specifications, and ultimately deliver outstanding solutions

Education and Work Experience:

What You Need


  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science or similar discipline

  • Programming experience, preferred both PLC/CNC and Windows applications

  • Experience with hands-on debugging of electronics/systems and software

  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment

  • Desire to develop new skills, gain knowledge, and work on challenging problems

  • Interest in industrial laser processing

  • Willing to travel up to 20% for onsite revalidation and customer troubleshooting

Desired Qualifications


  • Experience creating custom HMIs using C# .NET with WPF

  • Experience with one or more [PLC/motion/robot] control systems, e.g. Beckhoff, Aerotech, FANUC

  • Familiarity with system-level electrical schematics

  • Experience with both remote and on-site support of customers

  • Knowledge of industrial network protocols, e.g. ProfiNet, Ethernet/IP, EtherCAT

  • Experience with custom-machines/industrial-automation/system-integration
