Full Stack Java Developer at The E.W. Scripps Company

Job Description:

The Full Stack Java Developer is responsible for designing, developing, documenting and supporting web applications. This includes user interaction, launch, maintenance and integrations with other applications. This role involves working within a fast-paced product development life-cycle where development is managed through a continuous integration process.

Key Activities:


  • Develops new software products or major enhancements to existing software.

  • Documents development requirements for multiple system components (i.e., database, applications, operations, system environment, etc.).

  • Contributes to the overall software development lifecycle including requirements gathering/analysis, design, information modeling, techniques and methodologies, development technologies, release/version control, testing, and deployment.

  • Identifies, analyzes and resolves problems relating to systems integration, compatibility and multiple platforms.

  • Build responsive and adaptive websites that meet usability and accessibility web standards and best practices

  • Integrate data from various back-end services and databases

  • Optimize applications and websites for maximum speed, security and scalability

  • Resolve defects in a timely manner

  • Stay on top of latest industry and cultural trends

Education and Experience:


  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience)

  • 5+ years experience in software development

  • 3+ years experience working in Java or other object-oriented programming languages

Skills and Abilities:


  • Java

  • HTML/CSS/SASS, Git/github, Javascript/jQuery/AJAX, Relational databases (Postgres, MySQL), Linux, Web Servers (Apache, Nginx), Application Servers (Tomcat), Maven

  • Desired skills: Python, Node/NPM, Yarn, Grunt, Frameworks like Vue or React

  • Experience developing web applications

  • Ability to methodically troubleshoot/investigate problems in a timely manner

  • Ability to juggle multiple projects at once

  • Good written and spoken communications skills

  • Good team-working skills
