Industrial Hygienist/Safety Specialist



Your task structure



Summary:


Responsible for ensuring company compliance with federal and state safety and health laws. Develops and implements safety programs, employee training, and conducts hazard assessments.


Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Understanding of US OSHA and state laws and regulations addressing workplace safety and the impact to the company

  • Ability to perform Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) as needed

  • Understanding of hazards associated with site activities and production related processes and how to control the hazards

  • Ability to complete a comprehensive "safety and health review" of chemicals on-site

  • Knowledge of instrumentation used to quantitatively assess hazards

  • Understanding of what information is confidential and maintaining it as such

  • Emergency response protocol

  • Understanding of Chemistry to evaluate and make recommendations pertaining to PPE usage and conditions within a PSM chemical facility

  • Developing and presenting training

  • Maintaining records as needed

  • Maintenance of department procedures for this position

  • Must successfully complete RCRA training according to job function and the regulations

  • Must successfully complete DOT/IATA training

  • Participate in emergency response as defined in the program

Essential Functions:


  • Determining compliance needs and implementing objectives through effective written programs, procedures and policies

  • Developing effective auditing programs

  • Communicate compliance objectives through training or other means

  • Capable of developing creative training materials and delivering a clear and concise presentation

  • Maintaining training records and programs in a current, organized manner

  • Maintaining current programs/procedures/guidelines

  • Keeping abreast of new safety and health laws, regulations and other developments impacting the safety and health of employees

  • Selecting proper safety and health controls for on-site activities (e.g., PPE, ventilation)

  • Ability to effectively communicate with other departments members, inspectors or consultants

  • Participate on the safety committee

  • Ability to balance multiple tasks (time management and planning)

  • Review incidents and near misses and provide recommendations as needed

  • Capable of problem solving and decision making

  • Evaluate conditions and materials to make PPE recommendations for handling

  • Capable of wearing an SCBA

Qualifications:


  • Bachelor of Science (emphasis in safety & health, chemistry, or biology)

  • Expertise in Occupational Health and Safety and Industrial Hygiene

  • Proficient computer skills

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills

  • High degree of creativity and initiative

  • Be an effective trainer and be comfortable in front of large groups

  • Mature, flexible, cooperative work attitude

  • Experience with behavior based safety a plus

  • PSM experience a plus
