The following position is for Alkermes, Inc.



Job Description:



This position will provide support for the Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) program at the Waltham facility, primarily in the area of chemical and biological hazards. This position may be called upon to provide assistance at other company facilities. Reporting to the Manager of Environmental Health and Safety, this position will include the following duties and responsibilities:




  • Oversee chemical handling procedures and practices.

  • Conduct assessments and classification of new chemicals.

  • Perform risk assessments to evaluate the proper handling of biological materials.

  • Monitor compliance with laboratory safety programs, particularly as they relate to chemical hygiene and biosafety.

  • Conduct ergonomic assessments to support both office and remote-based employee workstations.

  • Develop and conduct training, including general site orientation and specific technical training regarding equipment and material usage.

  • Provide support and assistance to researchers regarding chemical usage.

  • Identify controls and procedures to prevent chemical exposures and incidents.

  • Conduct periodic EHS inspections to assess compliance with regulatory and Alkermes requirements.

  • Recommend corrective actions where appropriate and follow-up to verify completion.

  • Perform industrial hygiene sampling for various potential hazards including noise, organic solvents, and/or active pharmaceutical ingredients.

  • Prepare regulatory reports and compile any necessary data to support them.

  • Conduct reports and recordkeeping as necessary.



Internal Communication:



Works with Pharmaceutical R&D, Discovery Research and Biology, Facilities, and Purchasing to ensure compliance with all requirements.



External Communication:



Regularly communicates with regulatory agencies, vendors and contractors.



Minimum Education & Experience Requirements:



Bachelors degree in a science-related discipline (Chemistry, Biology degrees preferred) and three (3) years' experience in a laboratory setting or related field. The ideal candidate will possess working knowledge of two or more of the following: OSHA, DEP, EPA, RCRA, DOT, DPH, NFPA, NIH, CDC regulations as they pertain to pharmaceutical R&D. Experience in a pharmaceutical or biotech environment is highly desirable. Industrial Hygiene courses relevant to a laboratory setting are a plus. Candidates without pharmaceutical, biotech or laboratory experience may be considered if demonstrating exceptional qualifications.



Knowledge/Skills Needed:



The candidate must be well-versed in industry best practices pertaining to chemical and biosafety. Experience in conducting job safety analyses/risk assessments related to chemical and biological hazards is required as is knowledge of environmental health and safety regulations. This individual must be able to communicate efficiently and effectively in both oral and written presentations. The successful candidate will be expected to exercise judgment within broadly defined practices and policies for obtaining results. The individual may provide guidance to contractors, vendors and all levels of the Alkermes organization.
