Regional EHS Coordinator at US Silica Company

Job Description:

U.S. Silica is a global performance materials company and a leading producer of commercial silica used in a wide range of industrial applications and in the oil and gas industry. During our 121-year history, we have developed core competencies in mining, processing, logistics and materials science that enable us to produce and cost-effectively deliver over 400 diversified product types to customers across our end markets. As of December 31, 2020, we operated 23 production facilities across the United States. We control 489 million tons of reserves of commercial silica, which can be processed to make 197 million tons of finished products that meet American Petroleum Institute ("API") frac sand specifications, and 79 million tons of reserves of diatomaceous earth, perlite, and clays.


The Company is headquartered in Katy, Texas, and has an office located in Reno, Nevada.


Regional EHS (Environmental, Health, and Safety) Manager monitors, coordinates and improves the EHS condition, compliance, and functionality of all operations in their assigned area(s) of responsibility.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:



  • Carry out the responsibilities and duties given by the Director EHS (Houston) and Regional Manager.

  • Ensure that company EHS programs are communicated effectively within their area(s) of responsibility.

  • Report all EHS and DOT incidents immediately to the Director EHS (Houston) and Regional Manager as soon as possible. Unless instructed differently by the Director of EHS; initial notification reports are to be turned in 2 hrs after an incident; follow up documentation (including but not limited to photos, sketches, interviews, etc.) are to be forwarded within 24 hours.

  • Assist in the development of area specific EHS plans and procedures, based on SandBox Policy, Programs, and Procedures.

  • Ensure HSE/DOT compliance in accordance with company and customers standards are met with the highest standards and professionalism.

  • Complete, oversees, and manages assigned projects and audits.

  • Perform site visits/audits at various yards and wellsite locations to ensure compliance of SandBox and customer EHS requirements.

  • Conduct periodic EHS audits as directed by District Manager and / or Director of EHS (Houston), report deficiencies to District Manager and Director of EHS (Houston).

  • Provide for and supervise EHS reporting observation and EHS meetings, maintenance and dissemination of EHS data and statistics to management, drivers, and operators.

  • Participate in project risk assessments as required by clients and the Director EHS (Houston), capture EHS lessons learned and share key learning’s throughout region / district management and Director EHS (Houston).

  • Participate in selected site EHS tours, including customer sites.

  • Must have interpersonal skills, can-do attitude, ability to work cooperatively and productively with project managers, but be able to make the tough decisions, at job sites and at office work locations, in coordination with the regional / district managers.

  • Travel is required (going out to the field, in short notice) for visits/inspections, as well as assigned by the Director EHS (Houston).

  • Other duties as assigned as provided by the Director EHS (Houston) and Regional Manager.

  • Provide technical support, coordination, and guidance to area EHS committees.

  • Assist field operations managers in preparation/conduct of weekly EHS meetings.

  • Perform facilities visits / inspections, including hotels and any other housing paid for by SandBox.

  • Maintain high visibility with drivers and other employees.

  • Reinforce high transportation safety awareness and safe driving performance.

Required Education, Experience, and Skills: 



  • High School Diploma Required. 

  • Prefer a minimum of 2 years relative experience in EHS and / or DOT.

  • In addition to EHS responsibility, the Regional EHS Manager may be assigned to and / or oversee DOT related compliance functions at the district / region, including but not limited to the following:

  • Complete monthly ELD violations, missing logs audits, and train drivers not incompliance.

  • Conduct subcontractor EHS discussion prior to them going to work for SandBox.

  • Assist local management in identifying and targeting their primary transportation safety issues and/or unsafe performance trends (through DOT laws, road/ride checks, spot check inspections measures development, training, etc.).

  • Follow-up with management on identified high-risk drivers for counseling and/or retraining or further discipline.

  • Support field management in counseling drivers/employees and create a fact-driven investigation.

  • Assist as directed in developing and implementing transportation safety instructional programs for new employees.

  • Assists facility managers in performing periodic self-inspections in accordance with Company policies and DOT standards.

  • Ensure subject matter expertise is available on DOT compliance issues.

  • Monitor compliance with company policies and Federal/State regulations.

  • Provide feedback to management.
