Job Role Summary
In partnership with Goodwill of Central and Southern Indiana, Eskenazi Health has developed a 12-week paid Pharmacy Technician Internship Program. All eligible interns will have completed a Pharmacy Board approved Pharmacy Technician Training Program through one of Goodwill's providers. All eligible technicians will have their Technician-In-Training permit. This internship will provide exposure and practical experience in outpatient, inpatient and clinical pharmacy. The Pharmacy Technician Intern will perform all assigned technical duties within their scope under the law to practice at the highest skill level of licensure. The Pharmacy Technician Intern will provide all aspects of direct and indirect customer service with internal and external customers.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Actively participates in training and shadowing experiences in a number of different pharmacy areas
Performs all aspects of outpatient prescription order preparation within their scope up to the final pharmacist check and dispensing
Observes and participates (as appropriate) in inpatient pharmacy operations, including medication delivery, central pharmacy automation, automated dispensing cabinet replenishment and maintenance, unit dose medication preparation, sterile compounding, controlled-substance handling, and inventory management
Reviews principles of medication safety, describes current Eskenazi Health medication safety initiatives, and understands the role of the Pharmacy Technician in the safe use of medications
Observes medication assistance program coordinators to learn the basics of medication assistance programs including bulk and individual free drug programs, foundation assistance, and copay assistance
Identifies and demonstrates a working knowledge of medication assistance programs, recognizes when a program is appropriate for a patient referral and recognizes in EMR if a patient has qualified for a program
Obtains medication histories for assigned patients/areas and documents information in appropriate systems
Independently gathers and organizes data related to job responsibilities as requested by department management or other pharmacy staff on a regular basis
Provides excellent direct and indirect customer service by using AIDET process
Accesses and trains on all information systems including but not limited to: Epic Willow, Omnicell Automated Dispensing Cabinets, Epic Willow Ambulatory, RMS Point of Sale, and PharmAssist automated dispensing cabinets
Learns and works with a sense of urgency to assist patients and perform assigned duties
Maintains a clean, neat and professional work area at all times
Resolves conflicts in a calm, constructive and professional manner
Performs controlled substances accountability duties in assigned area
Insures a constant state of readiness for inspections by TJC, ISDH, DEA, Board of Pharmacy, and all other regulatory bodies
Consistently maintains compliance with all hospital and departmental policies and procedures and applicable laws
Job Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent required
Must obtain and maintain an Indiana Pharmacy Technician or Technician in Training license
Must have demonstrable mathematical knowledge and pass screening math test
Must complete a Pharmacy Board approved Pharmacy Technician Training Program through one of Goodwill's providers
