Purpose/goals






The Manufacturing Engineering Manager ensures that capital plans are developed and executed consistent with the division's strategic objectives and Ply Gem CAR procedures. Ensures capacity planning matches the strategic objectives. Ensures that the organization is current on industry technological advances and appropriately utilizes technology to advance quality, safety, new products, capacity, productivity, etc. Ensures compliance with all local, State and Federal regulations associated with OSHA and environmental regulations.



RESPONSIBILITIES




  • Facilitate the development of a cross functionally integrated capital plan which is consistent with both near term (current year) objectives and long term strategic objectives.




  • Facilitate the reprioritization of capital projects throughout the budget year to ensure the organization operates within its capital budget and accomplishes the intent of the budget associated with ROIC, quality improvement, safety/environmental, new products, capacity, asset maintenance and other priorities.




  • Ensure, with the Sr. Vice President - Finance, that proper accounting is accomplished both with respect to "new" assets and the retirement and elimination of "old" assets.




  • Manage the Capital Appropriation Request (CAR) process ensuring that all appropriate people understand the process and that Ply Gem guidelines are adhered to. All CAR forms must be cleared through the Business Unit Engineering Manager ensuring that justifications comply with sound logic and financial standards.




  • Works with the plants to review resource requirements for key initiatives and helps determine how best to support those initiatives.




  • Oversight of equipment procurement process and 1st article inspection for all plant capital equipment.




  • Provide for the "common denominator" in process engineering, maintenance engineering and blend processes ensuring that the plants are using sound approaches to engineering solutions, are building off of each plant's experience (not reinventing) and are coordinated in their approach.Plant Process Engineers and Maintenance Engineers should be considered indirect reports. Assists manufacturing operations in solving repetitive technical tooling, quality, process and maintenance problems.




  • Helps drive process improvement and standardization in all equipment from the corporate level.




  • Supports the plants in providing leadership and direction on Lean Principles, Project Management, and Best Practice execution.




  • Facilitate the capacity planning process ensuring that appropriate plans are developed to support profitable growth.




  • Assists the plants with the reliability and maintainability planning for the production equipment and supports them on vendor related issues when required.




  • Ensure that the product specification process is maintained and, with Accounting, ensure the BOM's and item master are maintained and current at all times.




  • Ensure that all Engineering projects are executed in a timely manner meeting the goals and objectives of the projects. Also, ensure that Engineering expenses are maintained within budget.




  • Provide leadership and development guidance to subordinates to ensure growth and performance goals are met.




  • Performs other duties as assigned.






REQUIREMENTS






Education




  • BS Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Manufacturing, Industrial Technology) or an equivalent Technical Degree strongly preferred.






Experience




  • 10+ years of project engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.


  • Prior experience in a management or leadership role is desired.






Skills/Abilities




  • Ability to gather and analyze data related to engineering and manufacturing issues.


  • Knowledge and skilled in problem solving tools and techniques (8-D, A3, DMAIC, 5 why, etc.)


  • Detailed understanding of Lean Principles and how they apply to equipment and facilities.


  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organizations policies and applicable laws.


  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.


  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, AutoCAD LT, and Project Management software.
