Position Description:

As an Sr. Advanced Designer, you will lead and contribute to multiple strategic projects with a strong human centered process and craft a compelling vision for early stage technology innovation.

You lead design efforts as part of multi-disciplinary teams and collaborate with Human Factors Researchers, advanced technical development teams and Product Marketing Managers to develop deep empathy for our users and generate desirable user experiences. Your role will be to develop tangible embodiments that communicate the strategic vision and user value in the form of prototypes, ranging from quick scrappy builds to refined experiences. You're comfortable being part of multi-disciplinary design teams that iterate quickly to develop future concepts. Most importantly you have strong story telling abilities that blend user value, design opportunity and potential for business growth.

You will be involved in the early strategic stage of the product development process. You should feel comfortable changing elevations quickly, from high-level strategic thinking to design execution. This is a full-time position in our Sunnyvale, CA Office.

Role Responsibilities:


  • Employ a user centered design process to help teams frame problems and define & explore opportunities
  • You enjoy collaborating with technical partners on tangible products while being comfortable with abstract and ambiguous user experience concepts.
  • Often lead the design work as part of a multi-disciplinary team working on projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Participate in user and customer research, clinical labs, and usability testing, and grounding design concepts with user-centered needs and insights
  • Collaborate with other User Experience Team members and partners to create compelling integrated user experiences
  • Combine user experience objectives with the objectives of cross-functional partners to achieve mutual success
  • Utilize a range of 2D and 3D tools and techniques to explore and develop designs and effectively communicate proposals
  • Plan and generate functional prototypes to conceptually explore ideas, facilitate learning, and to validate design solutions

What You'll need to be successful:

  • Ability to define future and new product visions. You bring the ability to dream the future, and and also design the iterations and steps needed to get there.
  • Lead strategic design projects and collaborate with internal & multi-disciplinary stakeholders.
  • Lead teams by helping craft great examples of design practice that address complex user interactions.
  • Present compelling user centered visions to senior leadership and stakeholders to influence project directions and help make strategic decisions.
  • The Advanced Design team focuses on front-end innovation work. A good portion of projects are not meant to directly transition into commercialization.

Skills, Experience, Education, & Training:

  • Minimum 7+ years in a user centered design field with proven design leadership and execution skills.
  • Minimum Education: Bachelors degree in Industrial design
  • Demonstrated experience leading design teams in the conceptualization with the ability to build, prototype and motivate teams.
  • Expertise and passion in the user centered design process and ability to demonstrate the power of Design within the organization to strategic partners.
  • Ability to build and grow relationships with partners.
  • Can work and solve problems independently, and seek out information and partnerships as needed
  • Past background and knowledge working with a wide range of IxD / UI / ID, UX Research in a highly technical environment or complex product suite, demonstrated through a comprehensive portfolio of conceptual and execution focussed work.
  • Possess strategic, systems thinking approach and mindset to identifying opportunities for Design to add value to the business.
  • Experience crafting integrated physical+digital experience prototypes that communicate a vision.
  • Ability to context switch between major focus areas within an organization.
  • Ideally, experience working in the medical industry and/or healthcare.
  • A comprehensive set of prototyping skills - from quick low-fi foam models to fabricating complex functional and/or appearance prototypes
  • Strong 2D visualization skills including sketching, storyboarding, and digital rendering
  • Strong 3D CAD and rendering skills to develop compelling and technically viable design solutions
  • Experience with SolidWorks is preferred.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time.
