TITLE:


Chapter Advocacy Communications Specialist (Grant-funded)


REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:


Senior Director, Advocacy Communications


BASIC FUNCTIONS:


Manage activities that support American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) chapter communications on vaccination and serve as social media support for AAP chapters, with a focus on COVID-19 vaccine confidence and other issues. Educate and motivate AAP chapters to ensure that they are well prepared to take action based on timely, quality information, and direction. Work with chapters and pediatricians to prioritize communications that support the goals of the "Engaging Pediatric Health Care Providers for Effective COVID-19 Vaccine Conversations" project. Oversee social media trainings and work with chapters to implement customized social media campaigns. Assist chapters with local media opportunities.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


1. Advise AAP chapters on strategies to advance their vaccination priorities in the media, in public policy, and in digital media.

2. Assist chapters in drafting crisis response and proactive communications planning related to vaccination.

3. Develop innovative earned media, grassroots communications, and organic and paid social media strategies around state chapter priorities, including COVID-19 vaccine confidence.

4. Develop customizable social media content for AAP chapters related to COVID-19 vaccine confidence and other immunization topics, both proactive and responsive to external news and events.

5. Collaborate with and oversee the work of a consultant to create and implement a social media training for AAP chapters, including developing training modules and organic and paid social media content. Provide ongoing support to chapters to share social messages, particularly smaller chapters without communications staff.

6. Regularly brief AAP chapters on opportunities for communications and outreach on vaccination as a key child health and public policy priority, including COVID-19 vaccine confidence.

7. Write media and social media materials, including preparing AAP chapter leaders for media interviews, press releases, op-eds, letters-to-the-editor, blogs and social media posts, etc.

8. Perform all other duties as assigned.


EDUCATION:


Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in a related field required.


EXPERIENCE:

Two to three years' related experience in communications required, including social/digital media. Experience writing for various audiences, preferably in the health care field.


ESSENTIAL SKILLS:


Must be a creative thinker and strong writer with the ability to develop content for different audiences, including digital platforms. Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously, work both independently and as part of a team, exercise good judgment, collaborate with various interbal and external constituents, respond quickly to time-sensetive matters, and take initiativerequired. Excellent communication, interpersonal, diplomacy, project management, analytical, and critical thinking skills required. Strong technical acumen essential with proficiency in MS Office, knowledge of social media platforms, and the ability to learn and apply new technologies; experience with virtual meeting platforms (eg, WebEx) preferred. Some travel and evening/work required.
