Summary

Coordinates activities of Labor crews to safely produce cost effective clinker and cement according to quality control specifications and plant production goals in a timely and efficient manner. Works under general supervision with specified objectives, policies, and performance standards.  Refers to supervisor when in serious doubt as to the proper procedure for a specified action. Exercises direct supervision of Labor crew employees.  Employees supervised ranges between 5-20 employees and may be spread between multiple shifts.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities


  • Responsible for directing and coordinating overall plant cleanup needed to ensure a safe, clean work environment throughout the facility.


  • Responsible for training new union employees, covering safety, environmental compliance, and plant operations.  Ensures employees are properly trained to perform tasks safely and efficiently.  Evaluates job performance and communicates expectations to employees.


  • Prepares daily reports, training records and environmental compliance documentation.


  • Maintains record of employee overtime, absences, vacations, and prepares daily time sheets for employees under direct supervision of this position.  Ensure that proper pay scale codes are recorded for employees on shift per the plant Collective Bargaining Agreement. Ensures that work order numbers and charge numbers are properly noted for internal records.


  • Ensures tools and safety equipment for the labor department are available and used properly.


  • Participates in the plant Emergency Response program as required.


  • Inspects work areas for safety hazards and ensures compliance with safety standards and environmental compliance.


  • Prioritizes, assigns, and communicates job duties to employees.


  • Works closely with other departments to ensure work areas are clean and leads efforts to eliminate re-occurring safety hazards and improves plant housekeeping efficiency.


  • Develops system to move plant cleanup efforts from emergency/safety work to routine/scheduled work.


  • Ensures that plant meets environmental compliance needs concerning plant road dust control.


  • Spends considerable time outdoors with labor crew in inclement weather during all seasons.


  • Performs other job-related duties as needed.

Required Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities


  • Basic knowledge of kiln and mill operations, and support equipment functions of the cement production process including operation of mobile equipment. 

  • Ability to understand and comply with union contracts covering plant employees (where applicable). 

  • Ability to read, write and perform basic math functions.

  • Skill in operating a computer to store data, generate reports in Word and Excel, and email. 

  • Skills needed include supervisory, communication, organization, problem solving and decision-making skills. 

  • Ability to effectively monitor production operations and quickly detect and respond to processing problems. 

  • Understanding and ability to comply with safety regulations.


  • Work requires the ability to inspect all processing operations including workers and equipment. 

  • Inspections involve climbing stairs and ladders, walking over rough and slippery surfaces, standing for long periods of time, bending, kneeling, and being exposed to extreme temperatures and weather conditions.

Education


  • Two years of college or technical school preferred. Emphasis in science and math preferred.

Experience


  • Three years minimum experience in the production area of a cement or related industrial plant facility preferred. Two years of supervision experience.
