Position Summary:

Based at our Headquarters in San Diego, we require a Senior Scientist to join our Research & Technology Development department as an Electrochemistry expert in a permanent role.

As part of the Materials and Applied Surface Science group, you will play an integral role in developing new sequencing and array technologies and related applications. As the company moves fast so does the technology we use, the candidate will have to be adaptable to a wide range of techniques and methods used in life-sciences.

Role Requirements:


  • Expert in electrochemistry and electrochemical techniques pertaining to biological analysis system, with the ability to develop theoretical models of systems of interest.

  • Electrochemistry in nanofluidic channels and pL volumes. Expertise with electrochemical processes in supercapacitors would be beneficial.

  • Ability to design electrochemical systems in conjunction with novel substrate and membrane materials design, and bio -conjugation methods.

  • Knowledge and understanding of substrate influences, electrode depletion and regeneration, and biologically compatible redox chemistry. Single molecule expertise is a plus.

  • Experience with a wide range standard analytical techniques and surface characterization techniques, for example QCM-D, and fluorescence microscopy.

  • Understanding of microfluidics, fluorescence based assays, and fundamentals of DNA (bio)chemistry.

  • Ability to own one or more key technical activities as technical expert (ownership of all deliverables), and to lead multi-disciplinary investigation

  • Experienced use of data and risk to formulate clear decision criteria to influence technical direction at a project level.

  • Strong contributor to IP generation, technical road mapping, and budget planning.

  • Communication of project status, risk and recommendations to multi-disciplinary teams and Senior Management as needed. Identifies appropriate venue, timing and depth of communication.

  • Collaborative, open and self-aware, team player; able to rapidly integrate into global cross functional teams to effectively support progress towards group and platform goals.

  • Ability to use leadership to delegate sub-tasks and troubleshooting, so as to enable growth of others. Able to coach project team members on their technical performance.

Education and Experience:

  • PhD in Chemistry, Electrochemistry, or Materials Science with minimum of 5 years of industrial or academic experience in a related field
