Senior Scientist - Product Development at Illumina, Inc.

Job Description:

Tasks and Responsibilities

o    Design and execute experiments, analyze and present data demonstrating feasibility of new methodologies

o    Develop analytical methods to characterize new and existing reagents, enzymes & processes and drive adoption of these across development teams and manufacturing

o    Evaluate new analytical tools and techniques, gauge R&R

o    Optimize assay conditions and chemistries to achieve new levels of commercial stability, robustness and performance

o    Participate in multi disciplinarily genomics-based projects, interacting with collaborators across consumables development, operations, instrument engineering, software, and bioinformatics

o    Have a good working knowledge of requirements of characterizing and developing IVD products

o    Work independently and within teams, with demonstrated ability to lead technical teams and manage junior staff

o    Conduct clear and concise communication by presenting updates in technical meetings, preparing written reports, and providing status updates and recommendations to Senior Management.

Preferred Educational Background:

The ideal candidate will have a PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Bioengineering, or a related field.

 

Preferred Experiential Background:

A strong candidate will have 5-7 years of relevant industry experience, and expertise in the following areas:

o    Demonstrated experience solving challenging, interdisciplinary problems at the interface of chemistry and biology

o    Experience using a variety of complex instrumentation for scientific research, and demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve instrument issues

o    Characterization of materials using a wide variety of techniques (such as UV-Vis Absorption, Fluorimetry, and HPLC)

o    Strong expertise in designing and developing analytical techniques and methods

o    Statistical analysis of large complex data sets using JMP, Minitab, R or similar and testing using DOE approach

o    Familiarity with concepts of quality and process control (ISO 13485 or similar, SixSigma and/or Critical Parameter Management)

o    Excellent laboratory, organizational and analysis skills

o    Proven record of transferring new products/ assays to manufacturing and/ or QC in a fast-paced biotech environment

o    Demonstrated ability to overcome technical challenges in a fast-paced, commercial environment within an interdisciplinary team setting

o    Ability to work as part of a highly efficient, collaborative team

o    Self-motivated and skilled in managing complex and technically demanding projects

o    Excellent verbal and written communication skills

o    Strong attention to detail and good documentation skills

o    Experience with developing IVD products desired

o    Experience in successful management of teams, including managing and developing multiple direct reports

 

Experience/Education:

o   Typically requires a Ph.D. in Chemistry or related field preferably specialized in nucleic acid chemistry, or equivalent work & educational experience.
