Summary:

Under the direction of the Operations Engineering Manager, the Automation Engineer II provides technical support for the projects, functions, and strategic objectives of the Advanced Manufacturing Engineering department, concentrating on: engineering support for new product development; development of fixtures and automation equipment; failure mode analysis and corrective action of process equipment and instruments; sustaining engineering for the legacy and newly deployed manufacturing systems; engineering and quality documentation development.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Design, develop, implement, maintain production level semi-automated and fully automated equipment

  • Informs automation solutions by leveraging a solid understanding of engineering processes and test methodologies.

  • Lead/support cross functional initiatives to stand up high speed automation through the use of disciplined engineering, measurement, accountability, analysis, and discussion of process alternatives in order to arrive at best practices.

  • Develop test plans, equipment requirements, protocols, and reports to ensure designs meet product and part specifications, regulatory requirements, and applicable standards for new equipment and processes including validation protocols

  • Collaborates with cross functional teams on product design, equipment design, process capability and DFx best practices.

  • Manage vendors and contractors as per the project scope and company procedures

  • Evaluate proposed stages, motion control, and vision system equipment for highly efficient custom manufacturing platforms

  • Design mechanical components/fixtures/grippers for high volume assembly

  • Perform tolerance stack analyses and create drawing specifications using GD&T, as appropriate.

  • Define and contribute to the development of product assembly equipment, system architecture, robotics concepts, and tooling with internal and external development teams.

  • Hands-on testing and development to support automation equipment prototypes, current/new processes, and various production issues.

  • Project management tasks including scheduling/planning and vendor management - coordinate with cross functional stakeholders and project PM on scheduling and engineering solutions.

  • Technical writing skills as applied to manufacturing documentation and process development - Experience in the creation and revision of technical documentation.

  • Accomplishes tasks while conforming to the company quality system procedures.

  • This position assumes and performs other duties as assigned.


Additional duties would typically include:

  • Solid modeling/design and detail drawings; SolidWorks preferred. Experience with tolerance stack up analysis.

  • Design, prototype, and actively contribute to the design of custom automation equipment.

  • Equipment testing and troubleshoot automated processes and equipment when error occurs.; hands-on debug experience.

  • Assist in the development of software and controls for automated manufacturing equipment

  • Analyze field and/or manufacturing failures of mechanical components, sub-assemblies, and instruments, and provide corrective and preventative solutions and actions.

  • Use statistical tools to assist in development and troubleshooting of products and processes.

  • Follow design, quality, and safety guidelines based on GMP, FDA, and ISO guidelines and related Quality and Safety Standards and Practices.

Experience and Education Requirements:


  • Typically requires a Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline, and a minimum of 2-5 years related experience or Master's degree and 0-2 years' equivalent experience.

  • Hands-on experience with fixture and equipment development for assembly and automation systems. Robotics design and development is a plus. Controls experience is a plus.

Preferred Requirements:


  • Familiarity with product safety, EMC compliance, OSHA safety, ergonomic requirements. Ensure safety requirements are followed and incorporated into all automation design aspects.

  • Understanding of Manufacturing Statistical methods, such as process capability and Design of Experiments.

  • General knowledge and understanding of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 21 CFR 820 and International Organization for Standardization (ISO)

  • Medical device or regulated industry experience preferred.

  • Hands-on experience with PLCs, programming, and networking systems

Functional Description: Technical Individual Contributors

Provides expertise in engineering, design, installation and start-up of automation systems. Actively assists manufacturing operations in problem solving with regards to the automated systems. Assists in the validation of process and facility automation. May also develop code and design system architectures in order to define user compatibility.

  • Normally receives general instructions on routine work, detailed instructions on new projects or assignments.

Language Skills: Must be able to communicate effectively in English. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
