JOB DESCRIPTION

Title: Toolmaker

Position: Full-Time | Non-Exempt

Location: WTI Twin Cities | Willernie, MN

Manager: No

Reports to: Director of Operations

SUMMARY OF ROLE

Responsible for the build of Precision Plastic Injection Molds. Oversee multiple projects and provide on-going direction and feedback. Make final product corrections before they go to the customer. Manage components as they go through production process. Resolve design issues. Interface with other Production departments.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Tool making Process:


  • Receive prints from Design.

  • Evaluate steel prior to Heat Treat.

  • Work with Programming to determine electrode process.

  • Forward to Milling to make electrodes; send back to Toolmaking for inspection.

  • After Sinker EDM, send to Polishing as necessary.

  • Finish grinding; read prints, grind dimensions, and tolerance of print accurately.

  • Perform assembly and address any design or production issues to ensure that all components go together properly.

    • Execute plans

    • Assign roles and responsibilities to team members based upon capabilities and workload.

    • Prioritize jobs on a regular basis.

    • Determine toolmaking strategy.

    • Inspect parts as they are being finished between each department.

    • Perform assembly on molds and finishing touches; resolve issues and perform inspection.

    • Send to shipping after all criteria has been met.



  • Provide technical support, guidance, and direction during mold build process.

  • Use strong analytical and systems focus to improve Toolmaking processes and procedures and directly enhance efficiency, accuracy, quality, and company profits.

  • Interface regularly with Wire, Milling, Programming, and Design departments.

  • Perform other tasks as assigned by Management.

QUALIFICATIONS


  • Two-year degree in Mold-making, machine tool technology, or related field

  • Three to five years of experience in a mold-making environment working with finish grinding, mold building, and executing functions

  • Proficient at reading blueprints (on paper and on computer)

  • Strong math skills in geometry and performing math calculations

  • Able to hold tolerances per design specs

  • Able to visualize completed part before starting work

  • Strong ability to coach, mentor, and work with others

  • Excellent mechanical abilities; able to utilize equipment, identify and resolve problems, and improve speed and efficiency of machines

  • Communicates effectively across all organizational levels with management, employees, vendors, and customers

  • Applies sound judgment and creative problem-solving skills to complex problems and business challenges

  • Shows positive attitude and personal pride in work with a passion for perfection; strong attention to detail

  • Highly committed, flexible, and resilient in overcoming obstacles and creating positive solutions
