Summary of Major Responsibilities

The Associate Director, Medical Science Liaisons (MSL) leads a team of regionally based MSLs and collaborates with cross-functional internal stakeholders to develop the strategic implementation of field strategies for the team.

This position is field based. Travel for this role is up to 60% within key U.S. markets and Exact Sciences headquarters in Redwood City, CA, to collaborate with senior medical affairs leadership to drive strategic scientific exchange, clinical education, and key opinion leader identification and development.

The Associate Director, Medical Science Liaisons (MSL) functions in a leadership role in the medical affairs group in the precision oncology (PO) business unit.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Act in a leadership capacity for the medical affairs MSL team and work closely with disease-based medical directors, pathology, and field-based teams to implement customer strategies aligned with scientific exchange, clinical education, and key opinion leader engagement.
  • Manage the MSL collaboration and support with supporting functions; including, but not limited to, marketing, market access, sales, customer service, medical affairs, regulatory affairs, and compliance/legal.

  • Collaborate with supporting functions medical directors, participate in the interview and hiring process, and conduct annual and mid-year performance reviews against their goals.

  • Provide performance feedback, mentorship, and coaching for MSLs.

  • Serve as leadership support and resource for MSL-led internal working groups.

  • Develop and implement strategies, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and ensure that MSLs perform their duties to meet objectives and compliance with regulatory requirements.

  • Work collaboratively with the sales and marketing corporate departments and field sales teams to create and implement educational strategies for key clients.

  • Provide insight into market trends and competition.

  • Build relationships and assist in the development of key opinion leaders as potential speakers and collaborators for Exact Sciences.

  • Build relationships with key decision makers in health systems, medical groups, healthcare provider offices, state departments of public health, advocacy organizations, and national/regional professional societies.

  • Collaborate with PO medical directors to Develop and implement strategy for identification and development of key opinion leaders or practice influencers.

  • Attend national tradeshows, symposia, ad boards, and scientific/clinical meetings.

  • Identify national/regional educational events; including, but not limited to, patient education events and continuing medical education (CME) events.

  • Supervise staff; including, but not limited to, organize and prioritize work, train/develop, and manage work performance.

  • Communicategoals clearly to employees to ensure understanding and success in achieving them.

  • Maintainmorale and support employee engagement initiatives.

  • Ability to understand the major data sources relative to the use of Exact Sciences' products; including, but not limited to, clinical trials, studies, and published reports.

  • Excellent English written and oral communication skills, and effective formal presentation skills.

  • Ability to work well independently.

  • Ability to manage time effectively.

  • Strong attention to detail with a focus on producing high quality work.

  • Ability to travel 60% of working time away from work location, may include overnight/weekend travel.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications


  • Bachelor's Degree in Life Sciences or field related to the essential duties of the job.

  • 8+ years of experience in healthcare or medical technology fields with medical affairs or relevant industry experience as outlined in the essential duties.

  • Demonstrated track record of leading and managing field-based medical affairs personnel.

  • Possession of a valid driver's license, no more than two moving violations in the past 36 months, and no unresolved license revocation or suspension issues.

  • Maintenance of automobile insurance to satisfy any applicable state or local requirements with liability limits of at least $250,000 per person, $500,000 per accident, and $100,000 in property damage per accident (250/500/100).

  • Demonstrated ability to perform the Essential Duties of the position with or without accommodation.

  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Advanced Degree in Public Health, Public Administration, Life Sciences, or field related to the essential duties of the job.

  • Experience with oncology and urology programs.

  • Experience with clinical trials.

  • Experience working with and/or for advocacy groups and professional societies.

  • In-depth knowledge of the healthcare market.
