What You'll Do

Aptima is seeking an Instructional Systems Designer to join its Learning and Training Systems (LTS) division. The successful candidate will work as part of a dynamic team to apply learning theory and instructional best practices to the design, development and evaluation of contemporary blended learning solutions, which may include interactive courseware (ICW), simulation-based training, electronic performance support, and instructor-facilitated training.

Experience Needed


  • ConductGovernment Furnished Information (GFI) review of existing schoolhouse content, learning products and documentation.

  • Conduct various analyses such as front-end analyses (FEA), job-duty task analyses (JDTA) and Needs Analysis among others to identify and validate training requirements.

  • Identify gaps in GFI through interviewing/observing instructors and subject matter experts (SMEs).

  • Translate analyses findings into appropriate instructional strategies.

  • Using ADDIE or similar methodology, develop various instructional design documents.

  • Evaluate or develop requirements for formative and summative assessments of trainee knowledge & performance.

  • Develop and conduct evaluations of existing courseware to measure its effectiveness.

  • Develop digital storyboards that illustrate the flow of courseware.

  • Work with multimedia developers to identify graphics and other media that will support and enhance the learning experience.

  • Support and respond to Quality Assurance specialists during product reviews.

  • Develop reports and briefings in support of the instructional development process.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams in a production environment developing new technologies (e.g., with graphic artists, programmers, game engineers).

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written), which will need to be demonstrated in a "job talk" should candidate make it to an in-person interview.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Minimum Requirements


  • U.S. Citizens

  • Active Secret Clearance

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Instructional Design, Psychology or a related field.

  • 3+ years' experience in instructional systems analysis, design, and development.

  • Experiencewith US Navy (USN) training standards

  • Experience in quality control practices and the ADDIE instructional systems design process.

  • Demonstrated experience in conducting front-end analyses (FEAs) and job duty task analyses (JDTAs).

  • Experience designing and developing web-based interactive courseware for adult learners.

Any of the following would be a plus:


  • Prior experience on a Department of Defense (DoD) contractor courseware development team.

  • Master's or Ph.D. in Instructional Design and Technology or related field.

  • Experience implementing the ADL xAPI specifications in courseware development.
