Illumina for Startups initiatives include Illumina Accelerator, founded in 2014, and Sequoia Capital China Intelligent Healthcare Genomics Incubator, Powered by Illumina, launching Fall 2021. Together, we'll advance breakthrough applications in genomics, including therapeutics, diagnostics, agriculture, synthetic biology, software and direct-to-consumer applications.

Illumina Accelerator is a company creation engine co-located with Illumina research and development sites in San Francisco Bay Area and Cambridge, UK. Illumina Accelerator provides select startups with access to seed investment, business guidance, Illumina’s sequencing systems and reagent and fully operational lab space in the San Francisco Bay Area or Cambridge, UK during each six-month funding cycle.

The key responsibilities of this role will be to run our Illumina Accelerator SF Bay lab in Foster City and guide the genomics startups in designing, planning and troubleshooting their NGS experiments to generate terabases of high-quality sequencing data!

Basic Function and Scope of the Position:

Initiates, directs, and executes scientific research and/or development strategies for startup companies participating in Illumina Accelerator SF Bay. 

Tasks and Responsibilities:


  • Work with the genomics startups to design and troubleshoot experiments. This includes making decisions involving designing, performing, troubleshooting, analyzing and presenting experiments.

  • Take a leadership role in particular projects and guide technical areas independently.

  • Work with startups to manage milestones, sequencing plans within defined target timeframes and make decisions regarding the goals and progress of startups.

  • Develop and provide next generation sequencing training to genomics startups in collaboration with Illumina colleagues.

  • Develop infrastructure processes to support Illumina Accelerator SF Bay.

  • Perform lab administrative functions such as stocking, instrument upkeep, room bookings, and facilities coordination.

  • Interface with various internal departments and serve as liaison for Illumina Accelerator SF Bay.

  • Makes significant contributions to scientific literature and conferences.

  • Solve complex development challenges, optimizing existing methods, improving processes and scaling up.

  • Perform data analysis; write reports and present results and project assessments to Senior Management.

Preferred Educational Background:

  • PhD in bioinformatics, biophysics, biology, biochemistry or chemistry or related field.

Preferred Experiential Background:


  • Great understanding about molecular biology and next-generation sequencing.

  • 5-8 years experience in the field of technology development is required with sound foundation in chemistry.

  • Proven track record of technology development in a fast-paced startup environment.

  • Outstanding publishing record, patent history, or other evidence of scientific excellence.

  • Must be able to design experiments and perform data analysis for others and have demonstrated experience in achieving results with team members in non-biological disciplines.

  • Ability to translate corporate goals into executable plans understanding technical risks, mitigations and alternatives.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Outlook required 

  • Exceptional data analysis and interpretation skills.

  • Excellent communication and team management skills.

  • Must be very detail oriented.
