Job Description:

The mission of the Animal Health Diagnostic Center (AHDC) is to improve the health of food and fiber producing animals, companion animals, sport and recreational animals, exotic animals, and wildlife. These activities protect and improve public health, promote environmental stewardship, and foster economic growth.

The Shipping/Processing Center is charged with receiving incoming packages, shipping outgoing packages, managing the Diagnostic Supply Center, and preparing various media. The Lab Processing Assistant will support the overall organization by providing exceptional customer service to both internal and external clients at all times and will split their day between the Receiving and Processing Center units.

The Lab Processing Assistant thrives in an outcome-driven environment with clear deadlines, enjoys working on routine and detailed tasks, and is able to identify and troubleshoot problems using standard operating procedures. They are extremely reliable, flexible in dealing with unpredictable workloads, and work well under pressure in a team-based environment.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:


  • Manage incoming client submissions and supplies; oversee deliveries to the AHDC, receive, evaluate and sort packages

  • Perform courier services; transport packages between associated organizations, delivery service companies and the AHDC, move packages and materials within the organization

  • Provide extensive support to internal and external clients; assist with purchasing requests, billing processing, and shipping and supply inquiries

  • Work collaboratively with Accounting Service Center; monitor, evaluate and reconcile FedEx and UPS billing

  • Prepare and coordinate the shipment of specimens and supplies from the AHDC, to include specialized procedures for hazardous materials (EH&S, DOT, IATA), monitor and maintain trainings and certificates to meet job requirements

  • Assist with inventory management; monitor and maintain supplies within the AHDC Central Supply Center and the Shipping unit

  • Operate, monitor and maintain equipment per protocols within the Processing Center; utilize autoclaves, drying oven, dish washer to sterilize lab instruments, equipment and materials

  • Work collaboratively with personnel from lab and operational units to support diagnostic and research testing by providing guidance on supply ordering and specialized shipment of biologic materials

  • Perform other duties as requested

Employees of the Animal Health Diagnostic Center must adhere to the AHDC Quality Assurance system, confidentiality statement, standard operating procedures, and organizational policies.

Employees are expected to meet all of the Cornell University Staff Skills for Success, which are essential for individual and organizational success.

Employees working in the lab must receive the pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis vaccination series prior to or immediately after hire, which will be paid for by the department.

This is a 39 hrs/week position. The normal schedule will be Monday-Friday from 8:30am to 5:00pm (hours subject to change based on business need). Employees may be required to work outside of normal business hours, including occasional holidays, evenings, and weekends.

This is a 3 year term position.

Required Qualifications:


  • Formal training beyond a high school diploma of one to two years, or an associate's degree

  • Six months to one year of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills

  • Ability to work on feet for up to 8 hours a day

  • Ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines

  • Ability to handle sensitive, confidential information with tact and discretion

  • Works well both individually and within a team environment

  • Ability to push, pull, lift, or carry over 50 pounds

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Must maintain a valid driver's license

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Hazardous and/or infectious shipment handling certification

  • Experience using various software programs, including Microsoft Excel, with the ability to learn new software

  • Knowledge of medical terminology associated with testing and supplies used in veterinary diagnostics

  • Accounting experience
