We are looking for an Associate Director of HR/HRBP

At Illumina, our HR team is highly collaborative, creative, and passionate about the work we do to further our mission through our people practices. We are seeking a professional to join the team in an exciting, high-impact blended role where they will serve as the HRBP for our global Research and Technology Development (RTD) team and HR leader for our Foster City, CA location (with about 400 cross-functional employees and a CLIA Lab). 

We are looking for an HR leader with a track record of building teams and environments that help innovators thrive; and creating community and a sense of belonging for primarily site-based as well as remote employees.  The position reports to the Senior Director, HRBP for global Research and Product Development (based in San Diego, CA).  The role is a key member of the RTD Leadership Team, the Foster City Leadership team and global HR Business Partner teams.

All About You

Responsibilities:


  • Collaborates with highly innovative, energetic business leaders to define organization and people strategies that effectively support Illumina’s strategy and deliver results.

  • Understands the business imperatives and translates to aspects of the people strategy including leadership development, talent acquisition and management, diversity and inclusion, coaching and performance management, organization design, team effectiveness and change management programs that deliver measurable business impact.

  • Advises and influences leaders and their teams on the people elements related to strategic business decisions.   Shows innovation and forward-thinking orientation to solving these challenges.

  • Provides consultation on organization design, team effectiveness strategies and change management programs.

  • Works closely with the global RTD team in the creation and implementation of organization design and growth initiatives

  • Ensures effective leadership teams and succession pipelines through development, hiring and coaching. 

  • Leads core HR programs for the business including talent reviews, succession planning, quarterly “performance enablement”, and compensation planning (merit and equity cycles). 

  • Provides consultation on employee engagement and retention designed to support the desired organizational culture. 

  • Provides advice and guidance on all aspects of performance management including leadership development, accelerated development, coaching and terminations when appropriate. 

  • Serves as a key member of the site leadership team in Foster City, partnering to create a compelling brand and vision to attract, engage, and retain employees.

  • Partners with our COEs (Talent Management, Talent Acquisition, People Support, Compensation, HRIS and Employee Communications, Diversity and Inclusion) to deliver effective HR support and programs to the business.

  • Leads effective implementation and adoption of core HR programs for the business including workforce planning across global sites, talent reviews, succession planning, quarterly performance enablement, quarterly engagement surveys, and compensation (merit and equity cycles).

  • Leads specific project work as determined by both business priority and HR initiatives to drive results.

  • Implements professional development plans that advance skillsets with a view to future workforce needs.

  • May lead important learning and development initiatives including with engagement with external speakers, trainers, and in some cases, potential facilitation of online or in-person courses (with train-the-trainer support as needed).

  • Works in collaboration across site and regional HR leaders in the coordination and integration of initiatives across a wide matrix of functions and geographies including Asia Pacific, China, Singapore and UK sites

Education and Requirements:


  • BA/BS in Human Resources or related field of study.

  • Minimum of 10 years of HR Business Partnering and other relevant HR experience (employee relations and talent management).

  • Prior experience supporting R&D functions and working with highly technical leaders is preferred.

  • Proven communication and influencing skills with a demonstrated capacity to effectively and practically communicate complex ideas and business concepts with multiple levels and disciplines.

  • Demonstrated ability to influence senior executives, understand and translate human capital strategies to positively impact the organization, including senior level experience in talent development, organizational design and scaling, team development and organization effectiveness practices.

  • Strong business acumen is essential.

  • Curiosity and the ability to learn the business and understand what drives business results and outcomes.

  • Ability to effectively interact and communicate with multiple levels and disciplines.

  • Expertise in employment and workplace safety laws and compliance requirements.

  • Experience with implementation of Diversity and Inclusion initiatives preferred.
