This position reports directly to the Captain. If the Captain is unavailable, the EMT should report to the Division Chief or the Division Chief on call while keeping the Captain apprised of the communication via email, text, voicemail, etc. EMTs are accountable for responding to all assigned calls in the most appropriate, efficient manner and providing the highest standards of patient care while keeping a safe and hazard-free environment. The EMT works with a Paramedic on an MICU ambulance and contributes to overall patient care in the areas of patient assessment, triage, packaging and transport according to protocol. There are occasions in which the EMT may work with another EMT on a BLS unit within the system.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prompt and regular attendance at work.

  • Effectively follow all UT Health East Texas EMS policies, procedures, guidelines and chain of command.

  • Maintain all required certifications according to company policy.

  • Attendance at all Continuing Education (CE) courses as policy dictates.

  • Conduct self in a highly ethical and professional manner projecting a positive company image while maintaining a neat and professional appearance at all times in accordance with company policies.

  • Maintain a positive, professional, and cooperative working relationship with physicians, nurses, public safety agencies, the general public, allied health professionals, and other members of our EMS system.

  • Assess and treat any medical situation with appropriate techniques (resources and equipment) while maintaining the highest standard of patient care and professionalism according to current company standards.

  • Follow medical care practices as documented UT Health East Texas EMS Protocols and mandated by the Medical Control Board. The scope of medical practice will be confined to medical practice as defined by the Department of State Health Services (DSHS), unless otherwise specified by directives or protocols from the Medical Director.

  • Complete all documentation regarding patient care and billing information in accordance with company policy.

  • Maintain thorough knowledge of the ambulance and equipment, its function and use and reporting any malfunction or damage to equipment promptly in accordance with company policy.

  • Maintain the ambulance in a clean, organized and response ready mode.

  • When assigned as an Operator/Driver, will be responsible to operate the assigned ambulance under control at all times and in accordance with all federal, state, and local laws that govern ambulance operation, and in accordance with approved company policy and safe and efficient ambulance operation.

  • Responsible for safe handling of patient transport during loading and unloading, transport on stretcher, and actual transport on the ambulance.

  • Perform other such duties as may be required or directed.


Education:


  • High School Diploma or Equivalent

  • Must be at least 20 years of age

Experience:


  • Working knowledge of English grammar, spelling and usage is required

  • Excellent, positive interpersonal/communication skills

Certification and Licensure:


  • Texas DSHS certification as EMT

  • Possess and maintain all certifications required by the Medical Control Board and by the UT Health East Texas EMS Master Contract.

  • Possess and maintain current Texas motor vehicle operator's license and meet all company requirements according to policy.

DESIRED QUALIFICATION:


  • National Registry

  • International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) certification or Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) certification

  • Pediatric Education for Pre-Hospital Professionals (PEPP) certification or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Unimpaired mobility: Must be able to quickly respond to ambulance, must be able to access patients in difficult terrain, must be able to climb stairs, must be able to work in close and dangerous environments such as damaged vehicles, must be able with partner to carry equipment and patients weighing up to 180 pounds.

Physical Abilities: Must be able to perform strenuous physical requirements such as CPR, lifting and moving of equipment and patients in a variety of environmental conditions. It is preferred that you are able to swim at the basic survival level.

Fine Motor Skills: Must be able to perform required medical skills and techniques, such as bandaging, splinting, establishing an IV, performing endotracheal intubation and other advanced airway techniques, manual defibrillation, pleural decompression.

Vision: Must have correctable vision acceptable for day and night operation of emergency vehicles, must have color acuity adequate for determination of skin and blood color, must be able to read medication dosages on drug labels and syringes.

Hearing: Must be able to hear and understand information provided by patients, family or bystanders; must be able to hear breath sounds and accurately determine auscultated blood pressures; must be able to differentiate separate conversations in active, distracting environments; must be able to hear and understand radio traffic when responding with lights and sirens.

Speech: Must be able to speak and enunciate clearly and at a level audible to others in loud conditions, must be able to speak clearly in stressful situations, must be able to verbally communicate with patients, families and other emergency personnel.

The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand and walk. The employee is required to sit; climb or balance; step, stoop, crawl, kneel, or crouch.

The employee must lift in conjunction with the partner or assist in moving and/or balance up to 250 pounds and occasionally lift, move, and/or balance up to 350 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Works outdoors and indoors with occasional exposure to hazardous conditions and to blood/body fluids, requires respirator use, fumes/odors, extended day, and temperature changes. Frequently works with others, face-to-face contact with others with exposure to noise mechanical equipment, and electrical equipment. Performs shift work and performs duties frequently in a mobile environment and in confined areas.
