Job Description:

Performs programming and analysis functions in the development and implementation of new Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), revision of existing systems and special projects.  Develops solutions that show an understanding of users’ needs utilizing computer hardware and software and provides guidance and support to all Department users.  




Responsibilities: 





  • Utilizes clinical laboratory practices knowledge to develop customized software to enhance Laboratory operations.



  • Provides solutions to complex hardware and software problems.


  •  Identifies areas of improvement or new applications for computer technology.


  • Provides technical work direction and guidance to other team personnel as needed in order to insure timely and accurate project completion.


  • Performs analysis and re-coding of existing vendor Laboratory computer software.


  • Evaluates and makes recommendations to acquire vendor packages as they relate to Laboratory needs and assists with the implementation of new/upgraded software.


  • Collaborates with users to identify needs and requirements, coordinates software implementation and testing to ensure requirements have been fulfilled, and documents software testing and quality control, adhering to both D-H and regulatory agencies standards.


  • Provides leadership to Laboratory Section Supervisors in the analysis and improvement of workflow, record management, and reporting systems. Recommends and implements new or revised computer systems to achieve improvements.


  • Serves as technical resource for Laboratory application software and clinical computing issues.


  • Maintains computer files and logs, recommends and implements authorized file changes, ensuring accuracy of database after updates, analyzes interruptions in normal computer operations, and corrects problems.


  • Provides technical support after normal working hours as required.


  • Develops and maintains operations and user documentation consistent with department documentation standards.


  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.








Minimum Qualifications:




  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer programming, biology, Medical Technology, or a related major with 5 years of programming experience in a hospital laboratory environment, or the equivalent in education and experience required.

  • Proficiency in a least two computer programming languages. 

  • Familiarity with multi-vendor environments, operating systems, and microcomputers.

  • State-of-the-art knowledge of laboratory information systems and computer use trends.

  • Demonstrates expert ability and innovation in systems analysis and programming knowledge to support the business, clinical and technical needs of the department/Hospital.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required.
